Successful alumnae
Fay Gibian Lohr, Class of 1962
As executive director of the Central Virginia Foodbank, Fay Gibian Lohr '62 works with more than 584 community agencies in six cities and 31 counties to get food to those who need it most: children, the elderly, and the working poor, just to name a few.
Under her leadership, the Foodbank moved to an expanded warehouse facility in 2001. Its industrial-sized cooler is making another goal possible: providing more fresh produce to member agencies' clients.
"Eating healthy costs money," Ms. Lohr said. "Often it's just not possible for single working moms or older people on fixed incomes."
Lee Boudreaux, Class of 1986
Lee Boudreaux '86 has loved books and reading for as long as she can remember.
Today, she's living a bookworm's dream as a senior editor at Random House in New York.
Like any good page-turner, the early parts of Ms. Boudreaux's story foreshadowed what was to come.
A member of St. Margaret's Quill and Scroll journalism honor society, she edited the SMS yearbook her senior year.
Now she works with authors like Stephen King and Adriana Trigiani.
Being a book editor is not what most people imagine it to be.
"Currently, I have six 300-page manuscripts on my desk and nine on the floor," Ms. Boudreaux explains. Reading takes place nights and weekends. During the day, she concentrates on bringing in new projects and networking with agents.
"Publishing is the ultimate needle-in-a-haystack profession, " she said.
"What you count on and hope for is that someone will walk into a bookstore and spend $25 on the 'needle' that you've found and polished."
Amy Bevans, Class of 1997
Like most teenaged girls, Amy Bevans '97 loved fashion. At age 23, she's already parlayed that interest into a successful business, Richmond's A.R. Bevans.
"I wanted to provide an opportunity for mothers and daughters to shop together," Ms. Bevans said. "Unlike corporate retailers, specialty stores give women the opportunity to create their own unique look with distinctive clothing and accessories."
Her store carries a lively mix of the traditional and trendy. Clothes, bags, and other accessories range from business and dressy casual to casual and represent such bridge and designer lines as Banu, Bisou Bisou, Custo Barcelona, MAG, Trina Turc, and Santi.
