Tappahannock’s Brockenbrough House (c. 1763) records a fascinating, nearly 250-year history of changing architectural influences and building practices. Its walls enclose the history of Virginia itself, having witnessed a Stamp Act riot in 1766 and British warships’ attack in 1814. Thanks to generous donors and an expert steering committee, the building’s foundations have been waterproofed and much of its wooden structure has been reinforced. Still more remains to be done.
