Community – Communication – Cell Phones

In responding to the student request for permission to use cell phones at St. Margaret’s school, we considered the importance of community to us. In order to see the effect of cell phones on our sense of community, we will hold a trial period from May 1st until graduation.

The underclass students who will participate in this trial have met our criteria for living well within our community by earning merit status for 4 or more two week periods during the year. In order to afford more seniors the opportunity to participate in this trial during their final month with us, we will also include those seniors who are not in academic danger who achieved merit status at least once during their senior year.

If this trial period is successful, the underclass students who participated this year will be able to begin next year with cell phone privileges and we will add other students later in the year after they have shown their ability to live well within our community.

Having a cell phone will always be a parental decision, even if a student has earned the privilege. The student and her parents must sign an acceptable use agreement and the phone must be registered in the School Life Office.

When and where can cell phones be used?

Weekdays
In your own dorm and at the same times as those with room phones can use their phones. Phones may not be used during study hall or after lights out.

Weekends
From Friday at 5:30 until Sunday at 5:30 cell phones may be used anywhere EXCEPT the dining room and the library. On school trips, those who have cell phone privileges must follow the policy for the trip. If those without cell phone privileges cannot take their phones, you may not take yours.

How can you lose this privilege?
If you use your phone at a time or in a way other than those indicated above, you will lose your cell phone privilege for the remainder of the trimester. If you lend your phone to someone else who misuses it, you will still lose your cell phone privilege.

If you have obtained the privilege of having your own cell phone, please consider what that means for community life. We ask that you show respect when in the company of others and in common spaces when placing and receiving calls. Phone use should be consistent with the Community Life guidelines which are based on cooperation with and consideration for all members of our community.
