Artists in Residence
Thanks to St. Margaret's Artist-in-Residence Program, students have the opportunity to study with working professionals and learn creative theories and skill they might not otherwise be exposed to until college. Resident artists spend a year living and working at school, teaching both in the established art curriculum and within their area of specialty. They also lead the after-school art activity, offer classes to adults in the local community and work with SMS students to create a permanent work of art collection for the school to enjoy. Since the program was established in 2001, a ceramicist, photographer and two painters have shared their talents with our students. "They're different from most art teachers. Instead of insisting that your art follow rules or that it look a certain way, they help you pursue your own ideas, to find yourself in your art." -- Lindsay Swinson '04 Fall 2009 saw the realization of the Hope for the Planet Collection designed for hanging in the lobby of the local Riverside Tappahannock Hospital. Some 28 students from art classes and other disciplines assembled the birds each inspired by series of messages. SMS junior Amelia Chen was recently selected as a finalist in the Fourth Annual Lucerne The Art of Dairy Art Contest, “Taste of Moo-sic.” As a finalist, Chen replicated a design she submitted on paper onto a 5’x 8’ life-size cow sculpture.
