Campus life

"As a school, St. Margaret's is preparation for life. As a community, it is a way of life."
--Margaret Broad, Head of School

School Life St. Margaret's is a community first and foremost. Shared values, encapsulated in our Honor Code, make living and learning with others a rewarding experience. Outside the dorms and classrooms, students find a wide range of co-curricular opportunities, including clubs, committees, performance groups and publications. Interested in something new? Every year, our students add at least one organization to the list.

Residential Life
Dorms offer both a structured environment and an opportunity to experience living in a close community of friends and teachers. Full-time Dorm Heads and resident teachers who serve as dorm parents provide adult supervision. In addition, juniors and seniors are selected each year to be prefects (resident assistants). Prefects, along with dorm parents, live on every floor and are ready to lend an understanding ear or helping hand.

Every week boarders attend weekly residential life meetings led by the Director of Residence. This is an interactive forum where topics ranging from fire safety to peer mediation are first presented to the whole, then discussed in smaller groups. Some weeks, these meetings have a lighter tone and include activities such as baking cookies or going on a campus scavenger hunt. Either way, the gathering fosters a strong sense of community, builds trust and creates a home among our boarding students.

Each grade level is assigned a different curfew, and students have rules they must follow regarding leaving campus, taking weekend trips and having visitors on campus. For more information on dormitory guidelines, see the Student Handbook

Day Student Life
Day students are active participants in the life of St. Margaret's School. Like boarders, they take part in sports, afternoon and weekend activities, special events like trips and exchange programs, and leadership opportunities.Days Students Seated lunches three times each week, peer leader mentoring, class activities, school traditions, and overnights with boarders offer additional avenues for forming friendships with girls from across the country and around the world. The Faculty/Student Center provides both lockers and a convenient spot to relax between classes, and a Day Family Coordinator ensures ongoing communication between the school and parents. Daily, round-trip transportation is available from the Northern Neck for an additional fee.

Student Organizations
In addition to taking advantage of classroom opportunities, students are encouraged to join clubs, publications, committees and performance groups. Some organizations select students to join; others are open to all. An activity period four afternoons a week allows time for meetings and practices. Most performance groups have regularly scheduled rehearsals during the academic day. Other organizations are responsible for setting their own meeting times, which often take place during a weekly meeting period. The following list represents activities in place this year. An asterisk indicates that a student must be selected to join the organization.
