SMS International Culture Shock Workshop 2004 |
||
|
On September 10-12, the new international students of St. Margaret's School participated in a Culture Shock Workshop. This is a 4-5 hour program created as a means for new international students to understand, anticipate, and tackle culture shock, an inevitable stage of living abroad. The Culture Shock Workshop consists of cultural simulations, lecture, individual and group work, testimonials from "seasoned" students, and role play. This year the workshop was held in Duck, North Carolina, in the Outer Banks. These pictures are taken of the students during the free time. "Why do Americans say, `Hi, How are you' and expect no response?" As Americans, we take for granted our understanding of these daily rituals and nuances of our culture. However, for international students, it takes time to learn the new rules of their new host culture. Not only are they learning a new educational system, but they are thrown into a new diet, a different climate, and are asked to learn a completely new strategy for making friends. And all in a different language! Tough, you say. Yes, but these students are brave! St. Margaret's international student come to brave a new world from South Korea, Thailand, the British Virgin Islands, Japan, Liberia, Taiwan, and Mexico. To help the new international students adjust to the new culture, they participate in a 5-hour workshop with Leslie Bohon, Director of International Programs and ESL at St. Margaret's School. Ms. Bohon organizes the workshop to help the students transition easily to life in the U.S. by understanding culture shock and American culture. |
