Spring Family Weekend, May 5-6, 2000
Friday, May 5
Spring Family Weekend, May 5-6, was a gala celebration for all. The weekend kicked off with a College Program for juniors and their parents in the Reading Room of the Viola Woolfolk Center Library Friday morning. Educational consultant, William Risley, spoke to the group about preparing for college, how to choose the right college, and standardized test taking tips. In addition, Mr. Risley shared humorous stories about his own college experience and those of his peers.
Juniors (r. to l.) Dwann Cutler, Sarah Muller, Becca Cassel, Britton Faulkner, Cathy Ryan, and Claire Stephenson take a break from their College Program and enjoy a quiet lunch on the Community/Technology Center terrace on Friday afternoon.
Friday night's dinner in the new Community/Technology Center provided an opportunity for students and families to sit with advisors, teachers, staff, and friends. The dinner was followed by a musical review in Ball Memorial gymnasium. Led by music director Beverly Gordon, the annual musical review featured a selection of songs performed by St. Margaret's 1999-2000 Treble Choir and Ensemble groups. The girls provided a glorious evening of music, singing both traditional and light-hearted, catchy numbers (who can forget Dwann Cutler's performance in "Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair").

Immediately following, all proceeded to the May Ball tent on the river lawn for the Lantern Ceremony and Ring Presentation. The traditional Lantern Ceremony was peaceful and quiet as the junior-senior processional entered the tent, which created a mood of reflection. Once assembled in a circle inside, juniors and seniors sang the Lantern Song co-written by 1999 senior class president Yaisha Harding and music director, Beverly Gordon. Members of the Class of 2000 presented their junior "Little Lanterns" with their class rings, after both groups left carrying paper lanterns lit by candles.
Juniors (r. to l.) Tae Washino, Ayako Kikuchi, and Sanae Hasegawa show off their class rings with senior Garnett Ashworth.
After the Lantern Ceremony, an art reception featuring the work of senior art students Kym Register, Chase Craven, and Ai-Lun Hsieh. All who attendended were amazed at the art collection provided by these three talented young artists. Kym Register, a native of Carborro, NC, will attend The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hall this fall. Ai-Lun Hsieh, of Taipei, Taiwan, will attend the University of Michigan this fall. Chase Craven, of Bethesda, Md., will enter Washington College in Maryland this fall.

The juniors read off a list highlighting each senior in the Class of 2000 and the eighth-graders gave out their own senior superlative awards. Senior class sponsor Catherine Neuhardt-Minor read a poem which she wrote in honor of the Class of 2000. Saturday's luncheon concluded with the announcement of the 2000 May Queen, Laura Hawley Austin of Warsaw, and her Maid of Honor, Jeong Min Kim of Seoul, South Korea.

At 7:00pm, all gathered in front of St. Margaret's Hall for informal pictures and mingling, as the seniors lined up for a class picture on the front steps. By 8:00pm, all guests stood around the dance floor as juniors formed a processional line, standing either side of the red carpet from the stage to the tent, as the formal presentation of the Class of 2000 followed. Headmistress Broad's husband, David, announced the senior class and their presenters. Also Maid of Honor Jeong Min Kim officially crowned the 2000 May Queen, Laura Austin. Laura Austin led the presentation dance to "My Girl" with her dad, Thom Smith Austin.
Inside the tent, students and families danced to the music of Bill Deal and Ammon Tharp of the Original Rhondels, who kept playing until "Listen to the Music" closed the set just before curfew at 11:30pm. An after-May Ball party followed in the basement of Latane Hall for students and their guests.
For all present, Spring Family Weekend 2000 was a special occasion many will never forget.
