October 1999 - A crowd of 350-400 people gathered for the dedication of The Community/Technology Center. Perhaps the biggest surprise of the evening was the naming of the building's dining area. In my honor, the dining area was officially named the "Margaret Robinson Broad Dining Room." (l. to r.) SMS Chaplain Ann Reeder Riggs, Headmistress Margaret Broad, and Campaign Co-Chair Margaret Shepherd Ray '61, at the dedication. Ray and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John E. Ray 3rd, made a joint contribution to the Campaign For St. Margaret's School - Educating Young Women For Life in a New Century in honor of Mrs. Broad. |

August 2001 - Summer time in Virginia is winter time in the South American Andes which makes it possible to hike the Machu Picchu trail in Peru in reasonnable comfort! A two week trip to Cusco allowed us to get aclimatized to the high altitude of 12,000 feet and food before we joined a small group of 3 other trekkers and our Peruvian guide to start our adventure culminating several days later in our arrival at the Gate of the Sun overlooking the ancient temple city of Machu Picchu.... what an adventure! Note the SMS fleeces!

November 2001 - Over the past few years, Ben's adventures have allowed him to develop his passions for cycling, photography, writing, and cooking. His bike took him most recently across Tibet, last year around Pakistan, Western China and New Zealand, and the previous year from Mongolia to China then into Laos, sometimes accompanied by Linda, all the while recording recipes and developing his photographic skills. March 2002 - Two of our national professional conferences also fall at this time, and I try to combine attendance at these with visits to alumnae. While in Napa Valley for the National Association of Principals of Schools for Girls conference, David and I had the privilege of meeting Colonel Frances Thorpe '32 in her Vacaville home. Frances and I have corresponded for years, so it was a special treat to share an afternoon with her, hearing about her military career as a flight nurse and homesteading in Alaska after retirement. |

August 2002 - For those of us who live and work in schools, summer has always been about making dreams come true. But what are dreams except other realities waiting to be realized, and what a joy to have time each summer to do just that! This picture will give you a clue to a dream that I've held for more than 30 years, a pilgrimage to Monet's home and gardens at Giverny outside Paris. David and I combined this with a return to the Normandy and Brittany harbors we last entered on our 30' catamaran after crossing the English Channel more than 20 years ago. This exhilarating and nostalgic two weeks in France was a welcome opportunity to travel in a country and with a language we've both called our own.

September 2002 - Vice President Dick Cheney squeezed a moment into his busy schedule to greet the group and pose for a photograph. Cheney acknowledged their applause, exchanged greetings with Head of School Margaret Broad, graciously stood for multiple photos, then was off in his black limousine to his next engagement, leaving the group with stories to tell about the time when they were just a few feet from the second-most powerful man in the world. |

October 2002 - Parent Doug Caton (Laura '03) led the campaign that raised money to renovate Latané and air-condition St. Margaret's Hall. The dedication of the new Latané was the centerpiece of the Fall Family Weekend. Check out the new reception rooms on the first floor and the renovated basement fitness and common rooms. Also honored in the same dedication Nita Carlson Enoch '71 led the interior design effort with vision and professionalism - the results are a joy for all to see ! |
