Tappahannock, VA (July 31, 2001) - Classes may be over for the year, but the St. Margaret's School campus is as busy as ever this summer - and that means thousands in revenues for area businesses. Nearly 350 people are attending camps and conferences at the Tappahannock school, and the total visitor count is probably at least twice that.
June 30, 2001: QUEEN MARGARET SCHOOLS BRING WORLD TO TIDEWATER
Tappahannock, VA (June 30, 2001) - St. Margaret's School students and their families - many of them local residents - soon will have even more opportunities for international learning and travel through the Queen Margaret of Scotland Girls' Schools Association.

Broad recently updated members of the Tappahannock Rotary Club on the school's campus master planning process and other current activities. Working with the community to be a "good and beautiful neighbor" is very important to the school, Broad said.

June 19, 2001: SMS RECOGNIZES 29-YEAR TEACHER WITH FACULTY PRIZE
Tappahannock, VA (June 19, 2001) - When English teacher Shannon Spears came to St. Margaret's School in 1972, teachers wore prim skirted suits and the recommended allowance for boarders was $3 a week. A lot has changed over the years, but at least one thing has stayed the same: Spears' devotion to her students and dedication to excellence in teaching.
June 18, 2001: SMS SHARES CAMPUS PLANS WITH COMMUNITY
Tappahannock, VA (June 18, 2001) - St. Margaret's School plans to remain where it is, and to stay much the same size, Headmistress Margaret R. Broad told a group of more than 50 area leaders at the school's annual community appreciation lunch last week. These initial decisions are part of the school's campus master planning process, she explained.
June 13, 2001: LOCAL STUDENTS EARN SMS COMMENCEMENT HONORS
Tappahannock, VA (June 13, 2001) - Graduation prizes at St. Margaret's School, including the school's top two awards, were presented to seven girls from the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula at commencement exercises in early June.
June 12, 2001: LOCAL STUDENTS HONORED AT SMS AWARDS BANQUET
Tappahannock, VA (June 12, 2001) - St. Margaret's School students from the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula received a variety of awards at the school's recent academic banquet for their accomplishments during the 2000-2001 year. Among them were six rising seniors who won college prizes that make them eligible for special scholarship consideration if apply to and are accepted at the sponsoring institutions.

Tappahannock, VA (June 6, 2001) - Eight girls from the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula are among the St. Margaret's School students recently selected by their peers and faculty to lead the school in the 2001-2002 academic year. Single-sex schools like SMS offer girls many opportunities to develop their leadership skills, said Headmistress Margaret R. Broad.

Tappahannock, VA (June 4, 2001) - Area residents have a unique opportunity to view paintings of local scenes by nationally recognized artist Lawrence Altaffer. A Warsaw native who now lives in Frederickburg and Syria, Va., Altaffer usually shows his work at juried art shows across the country.

April 17, 2001: SMS SEEKS VOLUNTEERS FOR UNIQUE SERVICE PROJECT
Tappahannock, VA (April 17, 2001) - Volunteer groups from the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula have a unique opportunity for service when more than 90,000 sweet potatoes destined for distribution to the needy are dumped on the St. Margaret's School field this May 12. The aim of the "Potato Project," coordinated by SMS, is to package the potatoes in 10-pound bags for pick-up by local food banks.
April 11, 2001: SMS STUDENT-ATHLETES EARN NATIONAL FIELD HOCKEY HONORS
Tappahannock, VA (April 11, 2001) - The National Field Hockey Coaches' Association has named three seniors at St. Margaret's School to the Field Hockey High School All-Academics Team. The students' selection reflects the emphasis that SMS places on balancing sports and studies, said Head Coach Kate Coghlan.

Tappahannock, VA (April 10, 2001) - Students at Aylett Country Day and St. Margaret's schools are going far beyond textbook ecology lessons this spring - and what they learn about Phragmites will benefit the local environment. Their goal is to identify the insect species that feed on the invasive plant that is pushing out native marsh grasses and flowers.

Tappahannock, VA (March 13, 2001) - Eva Walters, age 2 ½, paid rapt attention to St. Margaret's student Cariad Shepherd at the Essex County Public Library last week. Shepherd and other students in the SMS children's literature class planned and led two story hours. Each girl also wrote and illustrated a children's book as part of the two-week "Minimester" class.
March 12, 2001: SMS STUDENTS RAISE MORE THAN $600 FOR HEART HEALTH
Tappahannock, VA (March 12, 2001) - Students at St. Margaret's School have raised more than $600 to fight heart disease and stroke, which together are the two deadliest diseases in the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula.
March 6, 2001: SMS RIVER DAY FOCUSES ON LOCAL HISTORY, CULTURE
Tappahannock, VA (March 6, 2001) - Thanks to St. Margaret's River Program, students are discovering - and enjoying - the rich relationship between science, history and culture. That relationship came into vivid focus last week during River Day. This trimester, the all-school event explored traditional Native American life in the Middle Peninsula.
March 5, 2001: GIRL SCOUTS CELEBRATE HOLIDAY WITH SMS STUDENTS
Tappahannock, VA (March 5, 2001) - More than 40 Girl Scouts from the Tappahannock-Warsaw area recently "traveled" to seven different countries in less than three hours. They weren't on the Concorde - they were on the St. Margaret's School campus, where students shared food, games and songs from their native lands.

February 25, 2001: SMS STUDENT DESIGNS PRODUCED BY NEW YORK COMPANY
Tappahannock, VA (February 25, 2001)- Thirteen art students at St. Margaret's School have had an experience that many other creative individuals can only dream about: they've seen their works produced for a wider audience. Thanks to a relationship with New York textile manufacturer Raxon Mills, more than 20 patterns designed by members of Catherine Neuhardt-Minor's studio art classes have been woven into multicolored fabrics that now are on display in the school's Community/Technology Center.

Tappahannock, VA (February 11, 2001) -- Ann Melchionna, a senior at St. Margaret's School, has earned area and district-level awards in the "Voice of Democracy" speech contest sponsored by Northern Neck Post 7167 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Warsaw. More than 2,000 students statewide participated in this year's contest through their local posts.

Choral performances and community service projects were just a few of the ways that girls reached beyond the school's Water Lane campus.

Tappahannock, VA (December 19, 2000) - A new rip-rap revetment will do more than protect the shoreline at St. Margaret's School. The project, scheduled for completion by mid-January, also helps preserve local heritage and creates a living laboratory for the SMS River Program.

Tappahannock, VA (October 24, 2000) - Britton Faulkner of Irvington, a fourth-year day student at St. Margaret's School, has been nominated for the seventh annual Wendy's High School Heisman Award. The national awards program, created by Wendy's, the National Association of Secondary School Principals and the Downtown Athletic Club of New York City, recognizes and honors high school seniors who demonstrate excellence in academics, community service and athletics.

October 14, 2000: GIRLS' SCHOOLS PREPARE STUDENTS FOR FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Tappahannock, VA (October 14, 2000) - The statistics are startling. Women live seven to nine years longer than men, yet 55% of female workers aged 18 to 64 have no retirement plan. Many also have little education or experience in managing their own finances. As a result, a divorce or the death of a spouse can be economically devastating for some women. Others may not achieve the success of which they are capable.
October 12, 2000: INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS BRING WORLD TO TAPPAHANNOCK
Tappahannock, VA (October 12, 2000) - Six local families are making global connections, thanks to the "Friendship Families" program at St. Margaret's School. By serving as a home-away-from home for one or more of the school's 24 international students, program participants can experience other countries without ever leaving the United States.
October 10, 2000: DOUGLAS AND SMITH REPEAT AS WINNERS OF RIVER RUN
Tappahannock, VA (October 10, 2000) - Marshall Douglas of Mathews won last Saturday's Rappahannock River Run at St. Margaret's School, covering the 5K course in a blistering 15:49. Julia Smith of Tappahannock won the women's division in 18:37. Both Douglas and Smith, winners of the 1999 race, posted faster times than in last year's run.

Tappahannock, VA (October 9, 2000) - According to a recent national survey, parents choose independent schools like St. Margaret's because they encourage excellence, teach values and offer personal attention. SMS day students, however, have their own reasons.
October 7, 2000: TWO SMS SENIORS ARE MERIT SCHOLARSHIP COMMENDED STUDENTS
Tappahannock, VA (October 7, 2000) - Joan Claire Stephenson of Tappahannock and Alison Paige Wasserman of Baltimore, both seniors at St. Margaret's School, have scored among the top five percent of high school students nationally on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. As a result, they have been named Commended Students in the 2001 National Merit Scholarship Program.
October 5, 2000: COMMUNITY INVITED TO SMS RUN, CRAFTS FAIR THIS WEEKEND
Tappahannock, VA (October 5, 2000) - The Second Annual Rappahannock River Run and Crafts Festival may be sponsored by the St. Margaret's School Alumnae Association, but it benefits the entire community. Last year's race drew a field of 115 runners and walkers, and hundreds of crafts shoppers. The events this coming Friday, October 6, and Saturday, October 7, promise to bring even more visitors to Tappahannock.

Tappahannock (September 16, 2000) - Graduates of the nation's most selective colleges are among the eight faculty members and residential life professionals who have joined the staff of St. Margaret's School this year. They join an existing, veteran faculty of more than 25 teachers; the school's six most senior educators together have spent more than 150 years in the classroom.

Tappahannock, VA (August 29, 2000) - St. Margaret's School welcomes four new staff members to begin the 2000-2001 academic year: Monecia Naggs, Jenni Brockman, Louise Glendenning Cook, and Ann Marie Horner. All four women have relocated to the Tappahannock area and will be employed in the St. Margaret's Admission and Development Offices located in Brockenbrough House.

Tappahannock, VA (August 28, 2000) - This August marked the second year that Paul VI High School traveled from Fairfax to hold its pre-season football training camp at St. Margaret's School. The team was among six residential groups, including a girls' soccer camp and a fiction writers' workshop, that brought summer visitors to the Water Lane campus and the Tappahannock area.

Tappahannock, VA (June 30, 2000) - Not even the drizzling, rainy weather last week could dampen spirits at KIDS Camp. Judging by the faces of the 70 young campers and staff members packed inside St. Margaret's gym on Thursday (June 29) morning for the mandatory camp check in, one would never have guessed that there was an ongoing downpour outside that threatened to cancel the day's swimming activities.

The goal of the annual event, hosted by St. Margaret's School and the Community Relations Task Force, is to maintain strong ties between the school and its Tappahannock neighbors.
June 26, 2000: MARK EASTHAM ASSUMES NEW ROLE AS HEADMASTER OF ACDS
Tappahannock, VA (June 26, 2000) - Following his last official workday at St. Margaret's on June 30th, Mark Eastham will be the one in charge every day - as the new headmaster at Aylett Country Day School. He assumes this position after completing five years at St. Margaret's School where he has served as the SMS Director of Development, focusing on the school's capital campaign.
