June 30, 2003: SMS HEAD OF SCHOOL ASSUMES NATIONAL OFFICE
Promoting the benefits of girls' schools comes naturally to St. Margaret's Head of School Margaret R. Broad, who has dedicated more than 20 years of her life to educating young women. As the new president of the National Coalition of Girls' Schools, she now is taking her message to national and international audiences.

June 16, 2003: JOIN THE FUN AT KIDS CAMP THIS SUMMER
There's still time for boys and girls ages 6-12 to join the fun at St. Margaret's School's K.I.D.S. (Kick Into Discovery Summer) Camp. The first two-week, half-day session begins June 23.

June 16, 2003: SMS ANNOUNCES HONOR, MERIT ROLL STUDENTS
Head of School Margaret R. Broad is pleased to announce the names of students who have earned spots on the school's honor and merit rolls for the third and final trimester of the 2002-2003 academic year.

June 09, 2003: LONG-TIME SMS FACULTY MEMBER HONORED
Recent St. Margaret's School graduates often say they wouldn't have learned how to learn if it hadn't been for Director of Studies ViAnn Farmer. "You didn't let me get away with anything, Mrs. Farmer, but you were right," goes a typical tribute. "You taught me how to take responsibility for myself and that's why I've been successful in college."

June 09, 2003: LOCAL STUDENTS HONORED AT SMS AWARDS BANQUET
St. Margaret's School students from the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula were among those recognized for their educational accomplishments during the 2002-2003 year at the school's year-end academic awards banquet. Honorees included two underclasswomen who won college prizes that make them eligible for special scholarship consideration if they apply to and are accepted by the sponsoring institutions.

Girls from the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula were awarded some of St. Margaret's School's highest honors at May 31 commencement exercises.

May 26, 2003: SMS USES ROWING PROGRAM TO TEACH STUDENTS ABOUT RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN WINNING AND EXCELLENCE

May 23, 2003: ST. MARGARET'S TO GRADUATE 33 SENIORS
The St. Margaret's School Class of 2003 that graduates on May 31 had more college choices than ever as a result of the school's increasing name recognition outside the immediate area. Highly ranked institutions in Connecticut, Indiana, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania are new to the SMS college acceptance list this year.

May 23, 2003: SMS STUDENT-ATHLETES EARN SPRING SPORTS HONORS
Twenty-two girls from the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula have earned recognition for their athletic accomplishments at St. Margaret's School. They were among the school's student-athletes who received awards at the spring sports banquet on May 21.

May 23, 2003: NEW 2003-2004 LEADERS INSTALLED AT ST. MARGARET'S
Girls become leaders at St. Margaret's School, where there are more than 50 opportunities to captain teams, lead class activities, head organizations and help administer residential life. Students tapped for 2003-2004 positions in school government, the peer leader program and the dormitories were installed in a candlelight ceremony on May 21.

May 23, 2003: SMS STUDENTS TEACH SCIENCE TO AYLETT STUDENTS
Students in Mollie Conklin's ecology class at St. Margaret's School taught Aylett Country Day School five-year-olds about the Rappahannock River one recent morning.

March 31, 2003: SMS SINGERS SHINE AT CHORAL FESTIVAL
Singers from St. Margaret's School were invited to present four of the nine featured performances at this year's Virginia Association of Independent Schools Choral Festival, held March 23-24 at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland.

March 31, 2003: "LAWRENCE WASHINGTON" STEPS OUT OF THE HISTORY BOOKS AT SMS
Thanks to the generosity of Mrs. James C. Wheat, Jr., students at St. Margaret's School recently enjoyed a fascinating glimpse into America's British heritage. Mrs. Wheat, an Upper Essex resident and friend of the school, sponsored a March 28 presentation by "Lawrence Washington," the seven-times great grandfather of our country's first president.

March 31, 2003: SMS STUDENT-ATHLETES WIN WINTER SPORTS HONORS
Seven girls from the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula have earned recognition for their athletic accomplishments at St. Margaret's School. They were among the school's student-athletes who received awards at the winter sports banquet on March 21.

March 24, 2003: GIVE THE GIFT OF LIFE AT SMS BLOOD DRIVE
Local residents can help their neighbors in need--and indirectly, maybe even our nation's military service people--at a blood drive on Saturday, March 29, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Ball Memorial Gymnasium at St. Margaret's School.

March 10, 2003: SMS STUDENTS VISIT DEL. POLLARD AT CAPITOL
Students in Meredith Henne's government class at St. Margaret's School recently visited Del. Albert Pollard, Jr., at the Virginia Capitol to learn more about our Commonwealth's legislative process.

Hard work and good study habits have paid off for students at St. Margaret's School, who have earned spots on the school's honor and merit rolls for the second trimester of the 2002-2003 academic year.

February 17, 2003: AUSTRALIAN STUDENTS BRING "DOWN UNDER" TO SMS
They may not own kangaroos or live near Crocodile Dundee, but that hasn't stopped three students from St. Margaret's School in Berwick, Australia, from bringing a little bit of Down Under to Tappahannock as they learn about life in the US.

February 17, 2003: PUBLIC INVITED TO SMS EVENING PROGRAMS
Local residents are invited to join St. Margaret's students and faculty for a series of informative, entertaining evening presentations. There is no charge to attend the hour-long programs, all of which begin at 6:30 p.m.

February 10, 2003: SCOTTY SPORTS CORNER: SOCCER, BASKETBALL AND SWIMMING "FIRED UP"
A long weekend provided St. Margaret's athletes with four whole days to forget about their hectic school schedules and looming exams. When they returned to school, their renewed energy and vigor resulted in tough battles and some very close results.

February 3, 2003: SMS STUDENT-ATHLETES OFFER GIRLS' SPORTS TIPS
Student-athletes at St. Margaret's School will celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day on February 5 by doing what they usually do: getting out there and shooting baskets, scoring goals and swimming laps.

February 3, 2003: SMS ENSEMBLE ENTERTAIN THE TAPPAHANNOCK-ESSEX ROTARY CLUB
Members of the Tappahannock-Essex Rotary Club recently were entertained by the St. Margaret's School vocal ensemble under the direction of Beverley Gordon. The students presented a selection of popular music that ranged from folk songs to jazz tunes.

January 17, 2003: THIRD TIME IS CHARM FOR RETIRING SMS LIBRARIAN
Northern Neck native Winifred Delano has retired from St. Margaret's School for the third time after serving as librarian for a combined total of almost 20 years. A lifelong resident of Reedville, Delano thought she had packed up her books for good in 1999. But when the school found itself without a librarian in 2002, Delano offered to return until one could be found.

January 17, 2003: SMS STUDENTS HELP AT SPECIAL OLYMPICS
National Honor Society members from St. Margaret's School assisted athletes competing in the recent Virginia Special Olympics Alpine Skiing Competition at Wintergreen. SMS is one of only a few schools in Virginia that have supported the ski event for more than five years.

January 17, 2003: LIBERIAN LEADER SPEAKS AT SMS
Almost 20 years ago, he was smuggled out of the country disguised as a woman. Now Harry Greaves, Jr., has returned from exile to his Liberian home with the goal of improving the war-torn nation's quality of life.

Two St. Margaret's School staff recently shared their expertise in international education as presenters at The Association of Boarding Schools' annual conference in Washington, DC.

January 06, 2003: YOUNG SMS ALUMS OFFER COLLEGE ADVICE
Your teachers really are right, said a group of recent St. Margaret's School alumnae who returned to campus to offer advice to current juniors and seniors. Remaining organized, studying regularly and planning ahead are the keys to college success.

December 23, 2002: SMS CHAPLAIN CELEBRATES 10 YEARS IN THE PRIESTHOOD
The Rev. Ann Reeder Riggs, St. Margaret's School chaplain since 1992, celebrated the tenth anniversary of her ordination to the priesthood at a special chapel service last week. She has served St. Margaret's longer than any other priest and has enjoyed a tenure exceeding that of almost every school chaplain in the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia.

December 20, 2002: SMS CELEBRATES THE SEASON WITH SERVICE
Christmas is a time for giving at St. Margaret's School. Through holiday service projects and events, SMS students, faculty and staff are showing their appreciation for the community.

December 16, 2002: SMS STUDENTS WIN AREA MATH CONTEST
Three students from St. Margaret's School won this year's team math contest at Rappahannock Community College, demonstrating the powerful impact that single-sex classrooms can have on girls' success in mathematics.

December 09, 2002: AUSTRALIAN EDUCATOR VISITS SMS
The two schools share the same name, college preparatory mission and many of the same values. Now, through a new faculty exchange program, teachers from St. Margaret's School in Australia and St. Margaret's School in Tappahannock are exploring those similarities and learning from some interesting differences.

Tappahannock's beauty and historic charm have won an influential group of admirers, thanks to the work of a St. Margaret's School alumna who arranged a recent tour for the Historic Richmond Foundation Council.

Four girls from the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula have earned recognition for their athletic accomplishments at St. Margaret's School. They were among the school's student-athletes who received awards at last week's fall sports banquet.

November 4, 2002: SMS SPANISH STUDENTS PRESENT CELEBRATION
Students at St. Margaret's School joined millions of Spanish-speakers around the world in remembering the lives of departed loved ones at a festive Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) service last week.

November 4, 2002: JOIN YOUR NEIGHBORS AT THE RICHMOND FORUM
Two local institutions have combined forces to make it possible for area residents to attend the often sold-out Richmond Forum. Beginning this month, the Bank of Essex and St. Margaret's School are sponsoring ticket and transportation packages for the Forum's full 2002-2003 season.

October 28, 2002: CHURCH SCHOOLS HAVE LOCAL INVOLVEMENT, BROAD IMPACT
Four area residents have a nearly statewide impact on education, thanks to their involvement with Church Schools in the (Episcopal) Diocese of Virginia. They joined the other members of the CSDV Board at St. Margaret's School on October 24 for the organization's thrice-yearly meeting.

October 28, 2002: SMS STUDENTS SPONSOR NEPALI GIRL'S EDUCATION
They live a world apart in more ways than one, but that hasn't kept students at St. Margaret's School from building a relationship with a 13-year-old girl in Nepal. Through their participation in the Bahini Fund, which supports the education of girls in the Himalayan country, SMS ninth-graders are opening new doors of possibility for Nagina.

October 21, 2002: LOCAL GIRLS VISIT SMS
More than 15 students from local public and private middle schools got a taste of high school life when they visited St. Margaret's for Day Student Visit Day on Friday, October 18.

October 21, 2002: SMS "FRIENDSHIP FAMILIES" OPEN HOMES TO STUDENTS
Local families are experiencing another culture without ever leaving home, thanks to St. Margaret's School's "Friendship Families" program.

October 21, 2002: SCOTTY SPORTS CORNER: CROSS-COUNTRY, VOLLEYBALL CHALK UP WINS
The graduation of multiple all-star athletes last spring has meant a rebuilding season for fall teams at St. Margaret's School.

October 7, 2002: PUBLIC INVITED TO SMS FACULTY ART SHOW
The community is invited to view paintings by St. Margaret's School art faculty now through October 18 in the school's Community/Technology Center on Water Lane in Tappahannock.

October 7, 2002: RAPPAHANNOCK RIVER RUN WINNER
Douglas Marshall of Mathews won the Fourth Annual Rappahannock River Run at St. Margaret's School on October 5.

September 30, 2002: SMS STUDENTS LEARN CIVICS AT THE WHITE HOUSE
All 158 St. Margaret's School students got a civics lesson they'll never forget last week, when they met Vice President Dick Cheney at the White House. "It was the chance of a lifetime for many of our students and faculty," said Head of School Margaret R. Broad, "and an outstanding example of the opportunities that are possible at a strong, small school."

September 30, 2002: COMMUNITY INVITED TO SMS RUN, CRAFTS FAIR THIS WEEKEND
St. Margaret's School opens its doors to the community this weekend for two days of fall fun. The Fourth Annual Rappahannock River Run and Crafts Festival takes place on Friday, October 4, and Saturday, October 5, on the school's Water Lane campus.

September 23, 2002: SMS TEACHER BRINGS FRONTIER HISTORY TO LIFE
St. Margaret's School Latin teacher Marshall Lloyd loves history of all kinds, not just ancient. So when he was invited to give a presentation on famed War of 1812 scout Peter Navarre to elementary school children in Toledo, OH, Lloyd jumped at the chance.

September 23, 2002: GETTING THE MOST FROM SCHOOL? TRY THESE TIPS
Now that the new school year is under way, and all the talk of must-have fashions and gotta-get gadgets has quieted down, students who think big are free to focus on making this a semester to remember.

September 23, 2002: SUPERIOR SCOTTY STICKHANDLING
This SMS field hockey player successfully fought off a Fredericksburg Academy defender to maintain control of the ball in a September 20 home game. Despite stick-handling skills like these, St. Margaret's lost, 3-1.

September 16, 2002: SMS REMEMBERS SEPTEMBER 11
A survivor of the attack on the Pentagon was the featured speaker at a special chapel service at St. Margaret's School on September 11. Lt. Col. Phillip J. Ridderhof, United States Marine Corps, told students, faculty and staff that although he was just 200 yards from where the jet crashed into the building, his recollections are not those of danger.

September 16, 2002: LOCAL GIRLS INVITED TO SMS VISIT DAY
Single-sex education is big news these days, whether it's the federal government's growing openness to separate-gender public classrooms or bestsellers like All Girls: Single-Sex Education and Why It Matters. Families in the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula are part of the trend, too, thanks to St. Margaret's School.

September 9, 2002: RUNNERS ENCOURAGED TO REGISTER NOW FOR RIVER RUN
Fall's just around the corner--and so is the Fourth Annual Rappahannock River 5K Run/Walk. Participants whose registrations are postmarked by September 27 will enjoy an early-bird rate of $12 and are guaranteed a race T-shirt.

September 9, 2002: SMS ARTISTS SHARE TALENTS WITH COMMUNITY
Northern Neck painters Konst and Konstantina Konstantinov have found a new home at St. Margaret's School as artists-in-residence for the 2002-2003 academic year.

August 30, 2002: YEARS OF EXPERIENCE GUIDE NEW SMS TEACHERS
St. Margaret's School faculty possess roughly 250 years of collective experience. This summer, a three-day workshop spread this accumulated wisdom from senior teachers to newer faculty members, which will benefit both them and their students.

August 30, 2002: LOCAL ENROLLMENT AGAIN HIGH AT SMS
St. Margaret's School opened Monday (September 2) with a full enrollment of 158 students from 17 states and 9 countries. Among them were 11 new day students from the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula. They joined 33 local girls who re-enrolled for a tally of 44 - the maximum the school can accept in order to retain its small, 12-student classes and its low 6:1 student/teacher ratio.

June 17, 2002: SMS ALUMNAE HONOR KILMARNOCK RESIDENT
The St. Margaret's School Alumnae Association bestowed its highest honor, the Distinguished Alumna Award, upon local resident and business owner Mary Lloyd Pollard Lay at the school's recent reunion.

June 17, 2002: SMS FACULTY/STAFF CELEBRATE 135+ YEARS OF SERVICE
Ten professionals were recognized at a recent faculty/staff lunch for achieving service anniversaries in 2001-2002 that total more than 135 years.
