May 31, 2000: CHAPEL SERVICE RECOGNIZES COMMUNITY SERVICE GROUPS
Twelve student groups were recognized May 24 at a special chapel service. The groups were all honored for providing outstanding civic service during the 1999-2000 academic year.

May 30, 2000: SPRING ATHLETES HONORED AT AWARDS DINNER
St. Margaret's recognized its spring sports participants at an awards dinner on Wednesday, May 24. The evening program, held in the new Community/Technology Center dining area overlooking the Rappahannock River, honored athletes from the school's crew, lacrosse, softball, and tennis teams.

May 29, 2000: CHURCH SCHOOLS HOLDS ANNUAL MEETING AT SMS
School heads and board members from the five Church Schools of the Diocese of Virginia met at St. Margaret's School last week to discuss plans for the upcoming year.

May 23, 2000: COMMUNITY CHORUS PERFORMS GLORIA AT ESSEX HIGH SCHOOL
Led by choir director Emerson Hughes, the Tappahannock Community Chorus gave an outstanding concert performance Monday, May 15, at Essex High School. St. Margaret's School's Treble Choir and Ensemble and the Essex High School Choir both participated in Monday's concert.

May 22, 2000: NOVICE CREW TAKES FIRST AT STATE CHAMPIONSHIP REGATTA
With temperatures surpassing 90 degrees and humidity at a springtime high, St. Margaret's School crews faced less than ideal conditions in their final regatta of the season at the Virginia State Championship. The event was held Saturday, May 13, at the Occoquan Reservoir in northern Virginia.

May 21, 2000: TENNIS TEAM, RYAN FOCUS ON 2001 AFTER LIS TOURNAMENT
No. 2 seed Cathy Ryan is not bothered by her upset in the first round of the 2000 League of Independent Schools conference tennis tournament, May 12 in Richmond. Cathy, who finished with a 6-2 record in regular season singles matches this year, won't second-guess herself nor will she get mad that she didn't play that well.

May 16, 2000: NEW STUDENT GOVERNMENT OFFICERS ELECTED
St. Margaret's School juniors Sara Newman, Britton Faulkner and Dwann Cutler were elected President of the School, Vice President of the School and Head of Honor Council, respectively, in Student Government Association (SGA) elections held last week for the 2000-2001 school year.

May 9, 2000: STUDENTS TRANSPLANT 6,500 OYSTERS TO GREAT WICOMICO REEF
Twenty St. Margaret's School and Aylett Country Day School students worked with staff members of The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) on Tuesday, May 2 to learn more about oysters and their importance to restoration efforts in the Bay. The two groups, each equipped with a cooler full of oysters grown in their classrooms, met in Reedville where they traveled onboard The Chesapeake, a CBF-owned 42-foot work boat, to a nearby reef located on the Great Wicomico River. Here the students transplanted over 6,5000 juvenile oysters into the ecosystem.

May 8, 2000: JV SCOTTIES RALLY TO NIP ST. CATHERINE'S, GET FIRST WIN
Nine young St. Margaret's School softball players surprised the opposing team, their coach, Mrs. Mickey Ellis, and their fans with a striking comeback win over St. Catherine's School on Tuesday, May 2 at the Essex County Little League ballpark in Tappahannock.

May 7, 2000: FARMER LEADS TENNIS TEAM, LIS TOURNEY APPROACHES
Undefeated for St. Margaret's in singles and doubles last week, senior Katie Farmer is peaking at just the right time for the League of Independent Schools (LIS) post-season tournament. Farmer, a three-sport athlete, enjoyed two successful athletic seasons earlier this school year in field hockey (fall) and basketball (winter), respectively. Now Farmer is hitting her stride in tennis, hoping to bring a thin Scotties team into contention for the 2000 LIS conference tournament which St. Margaret's will host this Friday and Saturday, May 12-13, in Tappahannock.

May 1, 2000: STUDENTS COMPETE IN MATH CONTEST AT RCC
Fourteen St. Margaret's Algebra and Geometry students, grades 8-12, competed in mathematics competition at Rappahannock Community College (RCC) on Thursday, April 27 at the school's Warsaw campus. Students were invited to participate by St. Margaret's math instructors Keith Krusz (Calculus) and Susan Stephenson (Algebra).

April 26, 2000: MONCURE AND PIRTLE RECEIVE FUNDS
St. Margaret's seniors Ginny Moncure and Sara Pirtle have been awarded money from the Fary Memorial Foundation to apply toward their respective undergraduate education. The distinguished Fary Memorial Scholarship (FMS) is awarded annually to four seniors within a sixteen county local area.

April 25, 2000: LOCAL GIRLS PLAN 'GUTSE' EARTH DAY ACTIVITIES
This year's Earth Day celebration promises to be the biggest yet, as the event celebrates its 30th anniversary. Tens of millions of people from every hemisphere of the globe have a long list of activities planned.

April 24, 2000: "DAUGHTERS TO WORK DAY" MEASURES PROGRESS, CHARTS CHALLENGES
This year's "Take Our Daughters to Work Day" offers advocates for girls and young women a chance to take measure of progress that has been made on behalf of gender equity, while mapping strategy to overcome lingering challenges.

April 23, 2000: ST. MARGARET'S CLASS OF 2000 COLLEGE ACCEPTANCES
St. Margaret's Class of 2000 is one of the largest in recent years, with 37 graduating seniors. Though many schools have much larger class sizes, St. Margaret's, as a college preparatory school, is privileged to call a graduating class of 37 students "large."

April 19, 2000: ST. MARGARET'S TO HOST K.I.D.S. CAMP 2000
St. Margaret's School will hold its Kick Into Discover Summer (KIDS) camp for an eighth year for children ages 6 to 12 beginning June 26 in Tappahannock.

April 18, 2000: COMBS'S LATE GOAL SINKS COVENANT
St. Margaret's School's Carol Combs, like clockwork, always seems to score the big points. She has done this throughout her SMS athletic career in field hockey and soccer. This spring she's doing it again in lacrosse.

April 17, 2000: FOUR SENIORS ACCEPTED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA
St. Margaret's seniors Laura Austin, Sara Pirtle, Catherine Redfearn, and Sara Wagner have been accepted to attend The University of Virginia. "UVA is a great school and Charlottesville a nice town for these girls," says SMS college counselor Mollie Conklin, of Warsaw. "I know each of these girls will represent St. Margaret's well."

April 10, 2000: SMS KEEPS PACE AT WALTER MESS REGATTA
St. Margaret's School crews finished second and fifth in the girls' varsity four race held April 1st at the Occoquan Reservoir in northern Virginia. The 2000 crew team, only the second rowing team ever at St. Margaret's, made an astonishing debut at the Walter Mess Regatta. St. Margaret's competed against a battery of crews including their archrival, Christchurch Episcopal, and Matthews, Gloucester, and Episcopal High Schools.

April 9, 2000: COMBS AND SGROI NAMED LIS ALL-STARS
Two St. Margaret's student-athletes have been selected as members of the League of Independent Schools All-Star teams for the winter sports season. Carol Combs and Cameron Sgroi received the honors in soccer and basketball, respectively. "It's quite an honor to be named to an all-star team that's chosen by the coaches of your school's opponents", said Sue Saunders, Athletic Director.

April 8, 2000: SMS DONATES ABANDONED BIKES TO CHARITY
St. Margaret's publications staff member and assistant web page designer, Hollis Duncan, recently decided to do something about the rusty bikes lying around the school's campus. Former students left the bicycles behind, most of them entry-level mountain bikes. Typically, each bicycle had incurred one or two malfunctions that prohibited its use - flat tires, bent rims and spokes, missing pedals, deteriorated cables, and dirty, rust-laden chains were common problems.

April 3, 2000: BASIC NEEDS GROUP ORGANIZES BLOOD DRIVE
St. Margaret's School's leading community service group, Basic Needs, hosted a blood drive on campus on Saturday March 25th. A Charlottesville-based chapter of The American Red Cross Association (TARCA) sponsored the blood drive. TARCA is universally recognized as being among the nation's premier humanitarian agencies. It is the largest supplier of blood, plasma, and tissue products in the United States. Throughout the year TARCA organizes local blood drives and donor programs that benefit individuals and communities around the world.

April 2, 2000: TENNIS TEAM TOPS CHRISTCHURCH, 8-1
St. Margaret's varsity tennis team, making their millenium debut against their archrival, defeated Christchurch Episcopal School by the score of 8-1 in head-to-head competition last Thursday (3/30) in Tappahannock. The Scotties, led by Cathy Ryan, Katie Farmer, and Australian exchange student, Britt Erwin, couldn't be happier with their start to the spring 2000 season.

March 28, 2000: SMS HEADMISTRESS ATTENDS NAIS CONFERENCE
St. Margaret's School Headmistress, Margaret R. Broad, recently attended the 38th annual National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) conference held March 1-4 at the Baltimore Convention Center. The gathering attracted a diversity of independent school advocates, including administrators, teachers, trustees, and others concerned about the education of K-12 age children and young people.

March 27, 2000: SMS HONORS WINTER SPORTS TEAMS AT LUNCHEON
Junior varsity soccer coach, Chip Sprouse, began the St. Margaret's School year 2000 Winter Sports Athletic Luncheon reading a poem he had written titled "And Then There Were Seven". The luncheon honored St. Margaret's junior varsity and varsity basketball and soccer teams.

March 1, 2000: STUDENTS RAISES FUNDS FOR THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION
St. Margaret's School recently conducted its annual "Hoops For Heart" competition on Monday, February 21 in the school gymnasium. Ten 3-person teams and eighteen individuals put their basketball skills on display to raise money and increase community awareness of the need to support the fight against heart disease.

February 29, 2000: FORMER STATE DELEGATE SPEAKS AT SMS ON THE ENVIRONMENT
St. Margaret's School recently hosted former Virginia state delegate, Tayloe Murphy, who spoke on his upbringing, his tenure in the Virginia state legislature, and what he thinks today's generation can do to help "Save the [Chesapeake] Bay." As a lifelong resident of the Northern Neck and a three-time Chairman of the Chesapeake Bay Commission Mr. Murphy is an acknowledged authority on local environmental issues.

February 28, 2000: SENIORS CONDUCT INDEPENDENT STUDY PROJECTS
Thirty-three seniors have left the St. Margaret's School campus to participate in two-week independent study projects commonly referred to as ISPs. Each year senior students are given an option of designing an independent study project to conduct during the academic break (February 22-March 3) between the second and third school trimesters as part of the SMS minimester program.

February 8, 2000: EXPLORATIONS MINIMESTER PROGRAM TURNS THREE
Beginning February 23, St. Margaret's School will hold its third annual minimester program. The program, Explorations 2000, is the penultimate winter academic break affording both students and teachers a chance to switch gears and try something new as a means of enhancing and enriching the learning experience offered at the school.

February 7, 2000: SMS GEARS UP FOR MINIMESTER TRIP TO LONDON
In two weeks, twelve St. Margaret's School students and two faculty chaperones will depart Washington's Dulles airport and will arrive six hours later in London, England. Embarking on St. Margaret's first ever "Renaissance Woman's Tour," the students will be the second St. Margaret's School group to visit the United Kingdom this academic year.

January 26, 2000: SMS SENDS NINE VOLUNTEERS TO SPECIAL OLYMPICS AT WINTERGREEN
Nine St. Margaret's National Honor Society students recently served as volunteer workers at the 2000 Winter Special Olympics held at Wintergreen Ski Resort, January 10-11.

January 25, 2000: FARMER TO SPEND THREE WEEKS STUDYING IN VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA
Beginning next month, Katie Farmer, a senior day student at St. Margaret's School, will carry out a three-week independent study project in Australia.

January 24, 2000: VARSITY SOCCER BATTLES COLD, DEFEATS FOXCROFT
Playing in sub-freezing temperatures with snow on the ground, St. Margaret's varsity soccer squad defeated Foxcroft in Middleburg on Tuesday, January 18.

January 18, 2000: AUSTRALIAN STUDENTS COMMENCE THEIR STUDIES AT SMS
Australian high school sophomores Brittanie Erwin and Gemma Stephenson arrived last week in Tappahannock to spend a trimester of study abroad. These young ladies were chosen to represent their country in an international exchange program between St. Margaret’s School in Victoria, Australia and St. Margaret’s School in Tappahannock.

January 17, 2000: SCOTTIES UNABLE TO THAW OUT
Playing on perhaps the coldest day of this winter in Tappahannock, St. Margaret’s varsity soccer team (2 – 1 – 2) struggled offensively against a gritty Virginia Episcopal School squad on Friday, January 15th.

January 16, 2000: SMS LEADS THE WAY IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
St. Margaret's School has become part of a national trend in which girls' schools are setting unprecedented achievement standards in the academic fields of science and technology. With applications to girls' schools currently at all-time high levels, there's certainly reason for excitement around campuses today.

January 11, 2000: SOCCER COACHING DUO HAS HIGH EXPECTATIONS FOR 2000
First year St. Margaret’s School 1999-2000 varsity soccer coaches, Clarissa Roberts and Jennifer Gura, are eager to resume the season following Christmas vacation. Before the holidays, St. Margaret’s registered a 2 - 0 - 1 record.

January 10, 2000: ST. MARGARET'S HOSTS FORUM ON WETLANDS PLANT
St. Margaret’s School recently hosted a community "Phrag Forum" in conjunction with local volunteers, the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the Rappahannock River National Wildlife Refuge.

January 9, 2000: VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM
Under the direction of head coach Sue Saunders, St. Margaret's varsity basketball squad is off to a strong start.

November 30, 1999: HEADMISTRESS BROAD VISITS LORD HANNINGFIELD IN LONDON
During her recent trip to London, St. Margaret's School Headmistress Margaret Robinson Broad discovered the governments of Essex County, Virginia and Essex County, England are more alike than she first thought.

November 24, 1999: ENSEMBLE RETURNS FROM LONDON
St. Margaret's Ensemble, a select musical group of nine sophomores, juniors, and seniors, have just returned from a week's trip to London where they were invited to sing at the 250th anniversary service of St. Margaret's School, Bushey (England), held in St. Paul's Cathedral on St. Margaret's Day, November 16.

November 16, 1999: FIELD HOCKEY ENDS SEASON ON HIGH NOTE
Juniors Sara Shelton and Carol Combs scored 4 and 5 goals respectively this fall, as St. Margaret’s (8-3-2 overall, 5-1-1 League of Independent Schools Conference) wrapped up a stellar season with a gritty 0-2 second-round loss to Norfolk Academy Friday at the 1999 Virginia Independent Schools state field hockey tournament.

November 15, 1999: AFTER LOSS, NO. 7 ST. MARGARET’S RALLIES
After a marathon two and one-half hour 15-10, 12-15, 15-8, 14-16, 12-15 loss to league foe Collegiate in the 1999 League of Independent Schools volleyball tournament championship, top-seed St. Margaret’s ( 7-1 L.I.S. Conference, 17-3 overall) never thought it would happen again.

November 9, 1999: ENSEMBLE HEADS TO LONDON
St. Margaret’s Ensemble has been invited to join a mass choir of 210 girls from 6 countries for a special event commemorating the 250th Anniversary of St. Margaret's School-Bushey, Hertfordshire, United Kingdom. The celebration will take place at St. Paul’s Cathedral, London on St. Margaret’s Day, November 16.

November 8, 1999: MARY EMERY ATTENDS YOUTH LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
Mary Emery, a senior day student at St. Margaret's School, attended the National Young Leaders Conference (NYLC) October 19-24 in Washington, D.C. NYLC, a renowned youth leadership development program, invites high school students annually to our nation’s capital to interact with today's national leaders.

November 7, 1999: ADVANCED BIOLOGY HELPS "SAVE THE BAY"
The advanced biology classes at St. Margaret's School are working on "saving the Chesapeake Bay." The students are working in conjunction with organizations dedicated to this important environmental issue, such as Meadowview Biological Research Station in Bowling Green, VA, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, and the Fish and Wildlife Service.

November 1, 1999: ST. MARGARET'S TO HOST FALL CARNIVAL
On Saturday, November 13, St. Margaret's School will host its annual fall carnival on the School's river lawn. Featuring a moonwalk and sumo wrestling ring, the carnival will run from 1-4 p.m.; other activities will include children's games, face painting, a bake sale, food booths, and more.

October 31, 1999: ST. MARGARET'S VOLLEYBALL SPIKES TRINITY
Three points after Liz Bruno’s fifth kill Friday night (10/29), St. Margaret’s volleyball team sealed an easy 15-3,15-1,15-9 victory over Trinity Episcopal.

October 30, 1999: ST. MARGARET'S CLINCHES L.I.S. REGULAR SEASON TITLE, HEADS TO POST-SEASON PLAY
Following a thrilling 3-2 home victory over Covenant last Tuesday (10/26), St. Margaret’s varsity field hockey team (5-0-1 L.I.S.; 7-1-2 overall) grew anxious for its non-league match versus Christchurch Friday, October 29.

October 26, 1999: FALL DAY STUDENT VISIT DAY A SUCCESS
Twenty-nine prospective day students attended St. Margaret's Day Student Visit Day on Tuesday, October 26.

October 25, 1999: SECOND-YEAR COACH HAS TEAM FINISH SEASON IN WINNING FASHION
St. Margaret’s junior varsity volleyball head coach Jennifer Gura is overjoyed. To her, winning isn’t everything but improving—and having fun—is. Her team, with a record of 6 wins and 2 losses, has enjoyed both this fall.

October 24, 1999: WHITNEY BOWEN COMMENDED IN 2000 MERIT PROGRAM
Whitney Bowen, a senior day student from Heathsville, has been named a Commended Student in the 2000 National Merit Scholarship Program.

October 20, 1999: ST. MARGARET'S TO HOST DAY STUDENT VISIT DAY
St. Margaret's School will host its annual fall Day Student Visit Day on Tuesday, October 26. The aim of the event is to introduce prospective day students to life at St. Margaret's School.

October 19, 1999: TAYLOR, MCBRIDE COMMITTED TO RESIDENTIAL LIFE PROGRAM AT ST. MARGARET'S
St. Margaret's new dormitory heads, Karen McBride and Kate Taylor, are the brawn behind the theme of this year's residential life program: "Building a stronger community."

October 11, 1999: MARSHALL, SMITH WIN 5K RAPPAHANNOCK RIVER RUN
There isn't a better way to begin a crisp October morning than by running or walking. And that's exactly what one hundred thirty people did on Saturday morning, October 9, as participants in the First Annual 5K Rappahannock River Run to benefit St. Margaret's School.

October 10, 1999: NEW BUILDING DEDICATED, BROAD RECOGNIZED
Perhaps the biggest surprise on Friday evening, October 9, at the dedication of St. Margaret's new state-of-the-art science facility, The Community/Technology Center, was the honorary naming of the building's dining facility.

October 8, 1999: PETER RELIC TOURS ST. MARGARET'S SCHOOL
National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) President Peter Relic came to tour St. Margaret's School last week.

October 7, 1999: ST. MARGARET'S, ESSEX COMPETE AT WILLIAM & MARY INVITATIONAL CROSS COUNTRY MEET
St. Margaret's first ever cross country team ran in its second meet of the season Saturday, October 2 in Williamsburg.

October 6, 1999: ST. MARGARET'S SENIOR NOMINATED FOR 1999 WENDY'S HIGH SCHOOL HEISMAN AWARD
Katie Farmer, a St. Margaret's senior day student, has been nominated for the sixth annual Wendy's High School Heisman Award.

September 30, 1999: TWO ST. MARGARET'S STUDENTS SELECTED FOR AUSTRALIAN EXCHANGE PROGRAM
St. Margaret's School sophomores Heather Porter and Shannon Davis have been selected to represent their school abroad for a trimester of study in Australia.

September 29, 1999: SMS TEACHERS ATTEND ADVANCED PLACEMENT CONFERENCE AT DUKE UNIVERSITY
St. Margaret's veteran faculty members Louise Velletri and Shannon Spears are reaping the rewards of the Duke Talent Identification Program (TIP) for Advanced Placement Teachers they attended at Duke University, August 5 - 7.

September 28, 1999: CRAFTS FESTIVAL/RIVER RUN SCHEDULED FOR OCTOBER 8 & 9
St. Margaret's School will host a Fine Arts and Crafts Festival, Friday, October 8 through Saturday, October 9, 1999. The St. Margaret's Alumnae Association is sponsoring the festival as part of its annual fundraising efforts for the school. A 5-kilometer (or 3.1 miles) run/walk will also take place as part of the weekend activities.

September 23, 1999: ROOKIE FIELD HOCKEY COACH KATE COGHLAN GETS DEBUT WIN
Making your coaching debut on the cusp of a championship season, is not easy. Then again St. Margaret's varsity field hockey coach Kate Coghlan, a native of East Longmeadow, Massachussets, never figured it would be.

September 22, 1999: LOCAL BUSINESSES SHOW COMMUNITY SUPPORT, SPONSOR 5K RUN
Twenty one area businesses show "Ben & Jerry's" like devotion to their community as race sponsors of the 5K Rappahannock River Run.

September 9, 1999: SMS WELCOMES 151 STUDENTS TO THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR
Labor Day weekend marked the arrival of 151 new and returning students to St. Margaret's campus for the 1999-2000 school year.

August 24, 1999: SPRING SPORTS WRAP UP
Crew, softball, lacrosse, and tennis enjoy great spring seasons.

August 23, 1999: "GOODBYE" TO MRS. DELANO
Winifred Delano retires as school librarian.

August 16, 1999: ST. MARGARET'S HOUSES PAUL VI FOOTBALL TEAM CAMP
Paul VI High School (Fairfax, VA) finds St. Margaret's a serene retreat for week-long team football camp.

August 11, 1999: ZAZZARO AND LAROSE JOIN STAFF
St. Margaret's School welcomes new Dean of Students, Roxanne Zazzaro, and Librarian, Michael Larose, for the 1999 - 2000 school year.

July 30, 1999: ALAINE ALMOND JOINS SMS STAFF
St. Margaret's School welcomes new faculty and staff member Alaine Almond for the 1999 - 2000 school year.
