One tenet of the St. Margaret’s School mission is to help students become responsible adults who seek “a healthy, balanced life in body, mind, and spirit.” Our commitment to this mission is exemplified in actions taken recently to help promote balanced lifestyles among our student body.
Earlier this month, students participated in Ubuntu Day, a time when healthy living in all areas of life took center stage.
Guest speaker Marina Coleman of The Veggie Corner in Tappahannock and mother of Alex Coleman ’10, spoke to students about the benefits of adopting a vegan or vegetarian diet. Students also took “health age” tests which calculated their healthy practices and provided a customized report detailing how they can stay healthy and even add years to their lives.
Identifying healthy relationships was also on the agenda for the day. Colleen Jordan of The Haven in Warsaw, VA led a discussion about why it is necessary for girls to first identify characteristics they value in relationships. “Once you know what is important to you, you’ll now if someone has violated your values,” she told them.
Additional sessions included receiving flu vaccinations and signing up for Minimester courses. The day came on the heels of the recent school wide discussion about the MRSA virus and the negative impact caffeine products have on girls’ health.

A highlight of Ubuntu Day included taste-testing vegan
chicken salad, cheese dip, and tofu cheesecake (see recipe
below). They were a hit with eighth graders Ann Bladen
Sission and Chrissy Molinares.
