National Honor Society at Wintergreen

Teaching girls to serve their community is one of the most important things we do at St. Margaret’s. For the thirteenth consecutive year, members of the St. Margaret’s chapter of the National Honor Society volunteered at the Special Olympics Virginia Alpine Skiing Championships at Wintergreen Resort. One of only two schools invited to participate in the event, St. Margaret’s was presented with an award during the closing ceremonies in recognition of our students’ commitment and enthusiasm.

Those participating for the first time surprised themselves at the power of the experience.

“Helping with the Special Olympics was honestly the greatest, most rewarding, and most inspirational experience of my life,” commented Caroline Rollins ’09. “Seeing how excited the athletes were to compete and improve their skills brought the biggest smile to my face!”

Ji Ye Kim ’08 added, “The Special Olympics was very ‘special’ to me. Through this experience I have learned not only how lucky we are, but how happy the athletes are because it is always good to love and be loved.”

Corbin Brooks ’09 agreed, “It was amazing getting to know my athlete and realizing how talented he was. I can’t wait until next year!”

School President and veteran NHS member Hannah Kessler concluded, “This trip is always the highlight of my year. I enjoy working with the athletes and I think it is one of the most rewarding experiences you can give to them.”

ViAnn Farmer, who accompanied the group agreed, “Sue Haney and I are so proud of the teamwork of our students, both on and off the slopes. Being with them at Wintergreen, let’s us that their leadership is not just in the classroom.”
