Honor Code is Foundation of SMS Community

At St. Margaret's School, the Honor Code is more than just another sign on the classroom wall. Students actively teach others what it means to live by the code, enforce its standards, and use it as a foundation for the community they build.

Signing the Honor Code Students sign the Honor Book each year to confirm their intent to live by the SMS Honor Code.

"It's great to live with an Honor Code," said Honor Council Head Carter Holloway '01. "The code gives us a freedom and trust that students in a lot of other places don't have."

Honor Council members explained the benefits and the details of the honor code to all students during both orientation and a school-wide town meeting. The more subtle points, council members agreed, demonstrate the importance of living by not only the letter, but also by the spirit of the Honor Code. Here's what they told their fellow students:

Plagarism - Even if you summarize and change the author's words, you must still give credit to another person's ideas. Don't just give your homework, paper, or notecards to a friend who asks to see them.

Lying - If you have not done your homework, don't tell your teacher that you forgot it and will bring it tomorrow - he or she will find out! When you get a pass to use the computer during study hall, do not use e-mail, instant messenger, or play games.

Stealing - Vandalism is considered stealing, because it takes something away from the community; for example, when you write on furniture or walls. Don't borrow something from your roommate without first asking permission.

In addition to Carter, this year's Honor Council includes Shu Jin '01, Fola Ogundiran '03, and Brittany Walker '01. A fifth member will be elected in October. Seniors, juniors, and sophomores who have attended SMS for at least one year are eligible to run.
