Rebecca McKinley ‘10 on Giving Back

Christmas comes but once a year. Families and friends venture from near and far to gather during the holidays. While many wait in anticipation to see what Santa will bring, that is not what Christmas is truly all about. When you are in the store trying on a new pair of jeans, or admiring a beautiful dress in a shop window, stop. Take a minute to reflect; not about what to buy for yourself, but what you can give to someone else. The gift doesn’t have to be extravagant, expensive, or even store-bought. A thoughtful card, homemade goodies, or just a simple “Merry Christmas” to a stranger can mean so much, no matter how small the act may seem. Christmas should be the season of giving, not just receiving.

As head and active participant of Basic Needs, our student run community service organization, I am able to witness the spirit of giving year- round. Beginning with a school supplies drive in September, Basic Needs conducts several community service projects throughout the year. Our goal: to give back to the community that, whether we realize it or not, has impacted our lives in so many ways. I encourage you to let this be the year that you put others before yourself, and really think about how you can provide someone else with a joyous holiday season. Merry Christmas everyone!
