A Monthly News Update From the St. Margaret's Campus

Vol. 2, No. 8 Tappahannock, Virginia, April 2000

CAPTAIN'S CORNER

Dear St. Margaret's families and friends,
Margaret Broad

April, for me, is always a month filled with planning and people. This is the time of year when it is important to stay focused on next year's goals so that all the pieces can be put in place to help us achieve them, but there are plenty of distractions because it is also the time when our campus is both its most beautiful and its most visited. Looking out the window is easy; looking ahead is not!

What are we planning? This week our Board of Governors will adopt a new Strategic Plan to guide the school over the next three to five years. I am thrilled at how many people have been actively involved in this process. Just this month, all of our students met by class to review the draft of the program sections of the plan. They let us know their priorities and suggested valuable additions to those already developed by the fifty-five participants in our January planning retreat. Next, our faculty met to review every section of the plan and offer their own suggestions. Latane Hall is at the top of everyone's list. This summer we will begin considering its future with a thorough professional assessment of its present condition and the possibilities for its alteration and improvement.

Who are all the people we have had on campus? Prospective students and families, our Board of Governors, Alumnae Reunion Classes from 5 to 65 years after their graduation, candidates for teaching positions, all have marveled at this beautiful spring. The cool weather has held the flowering trees in blossom longer than usual, and new landscaping has brightened every corner of the campus. Next, we look forward to welcoming our current families for Spring Family Weekend.

As you prepare to join us for this long-anticipated weekend, I encourage you to pause and look at your own student - your daughter, granddaughter, neighbor, niece, or friend - and consider the young woman you hope she will be when she is a senior preparing for this last step before commencement. As we consider this year's senior class, we can clearly see that the have become the young women we have educated for life. They are also ready to begin that life! But we are grateful to be able to keep them with us just one more month, always knowing that we will enjoy them again when they return for their own alumnae weekends.

With appreciation for our days together,

Margaret R. Broad, Headmistress

    COMPASS POINTS

College Acceptances - Seniors Admitted to Colleges and Universities
St. Margaret's Class of 2000 is one of the largest in recent years, with 37 graduating seniors. Though many schools have much larger class sizes, St. Margaret's, as a college preparatory school, is privileged to call a graduating class of 37 students "large". College counselor Mollie Conklin, of Warsaw, is pleased with the list of colleges and universities that members of the SMS Class of 2000 will attend this fall.

Community Service - Basic Needs Sponsors Blood Drive
St. Margaret's School's leading community service group, Basic Needs, hosted a blood drive on campus on Saturday March 25th. A Charlottesville-based chapter of The American Red Cross Association (TARCA) sponsored the blood drive. TARCA is universally recognized as being among the nation's premier humanitarian agencies.
