A Monthly News Update From the St. Margaret's Campus

Vol. 3, No. 8 Tappahannock, Virginia, March 2001

CAPTAIN'S CORNER

Dear St. Margaret's friends and families,

Margaret R. Broad Now the campus is quiet, the dorms are locked, and the buildings gleam under the strong March sun. The air is still on this crisp Saturday afternoon. Today the energy of this community is just a memory, but one richly enhanced over this last month. Although many find February forlorn, for us it was just plain fun!

In this month's photo, I have changed identities with Cathy Ryan in Junior Variety. She made a convincing Headmistress, and I had a great time performing a skit with my assistant Hazel Laughton as the Junior Doughnut Girls. The junior class created a sensational evening for us all. The International Committee continued the pace with three all-school events - piņata and reggae parties and the international festival dinner. Armed with passports and plane tickets, we all boarded our transformed dining room for a flight around the world, all without a moment's jet lag! Our artists also had opportunities to share their talents at this trimester's Fine Arts Night and the Minimester Arts Night. A clever play, beautiful music and dance, as well as weavings, photos, and jewelry translated these talents for us all. We were impressed! We have incredible talent within this community and February provided opportunities for many to shine.

Even the end of the term took a more creative turn. Acknowledging that all students learn and communicate their learning in different ways, we do not schedule a formal examination period in the second trimester. Speeches, papers, projects, and presentations have allowed girls to show knowledge and understanding that we might not see in traditional written exams.

Now we are all ready for our time away, time when we can reflect on the year so far and anticipate the full spring schedule to which we will return. During the third trimester, we will be finalizing course selections with returning students; holding elections for student government offices and the Honor Council; selecting prefects and senior peer leaders; taking science outside with the biology field trip; launching our third season of crew; preparing a play for Spring Family Weekend; honoring our seniors at May Ball; supporting our tennis, lacrosse, and softball teams; planning next year's school opening during the new leaders' retreat; selecting exchange students for Australia and New Zealand; and yes, going to school!

I hope you will encourage your daughter to look at all of the opportunities available to her during these final weeks. Growth always requires a little risk taking and reaching toward selection or election is an opportunity available to many. I look forward to sharing the results of all of this activity with you in subsequent editions of River Views. I also hope you will join us on campus as often as possible to share this busy and rewarding life.

Sincerely,

Margaret R. Broad, Headmistress
