A Monthly News Update From the St. Margaret's Campus
Vol. 3, No. 9 Tappahannock, Virginia, April 2001
CAPTAIN'S CORNER
Dear St. Margaret's friends and families,
After Spring Break, we are always drawn to a longer view. Seniors now know their colleges; underclass students select their classes and consider leadership roles for the next full year; teachers make summer plans for renewal and professional growth. This year, at the administrative level, we are challenging ourselves to gaze even further ahead: how will our facilities change to support our program over the next 10 years?
Campus master planning is a core element of our new strategic plan and the formal process that will help us answer this question. But before we develop a new plan, we will be formulating many more questions and asking many of you to help us find the answers. We have selected Jeff Blanchard, a Richmond native and professional master planner, to guide us through this comprehensive, nine-month process. He is a veteran of over 40 independent school master planning exercises and brings a depth of understanding of schools, small towns, and facilities issues. He also has special interest in historic preservation, an important element for us as we strive to preserve our three elegant riverfront buildings that date from the mid-1700s.
In April, Jeff will work with groups of faculty, board members, and administrators to develop the core planning issues. Many of these have already been highlighted within our strategic plan. Before the close of this year, he will hold separate sessions with all students, boarding students, and all faculty. We will also introduce this process at our annual Community Appreciation Luncheon and Alumnae Reunion Weekend, both in June.
When we return in the fall, the data gathering segment will be completed, and we will be ready to move into the strategy development phase with these same constituencies. At that point, we will add parents, community neighbors, and local partnership organizations to our discussions. As we move through this process, I will use this monthly column to keep you up to date with our progress. Please feel free to call or e-mail with questions or ideas! And, next time you visit the campus, take an extra moment to walk among the buildings and along the river to consider the future of this magnificent site.
Sincerely,
Margaret R. Broad, Headmistress
