A Monthly News Update From the St. Margaret's Campus
Vol. 7, No. 11 Tappahannock, Virginia, June 2005
CAPTAIN'S CORNER
Dear St. Margaret's friends and families,
June at St. Margaret’s is always a celebration of connections.
The first weekend gathers students, faculty, and families together one last time to formally honor the year we’ve spent together and the promise of what those days will mean in all of our lives.
On the second weekend, suddenly we see that promise fulfilled as our alumnae move into the dorms and classrooms, find their former classmates and begin to tell their stories. In the week in between, we sit together as a faculty and staff for one last day, evaluating and planning, but pausing, too, to honor our colleagues for their anniversary years of service, just like our reunion classes, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25….
And this year, the bonds intertwined in the experiences of our six legacy graduates. All shared appreciation for lessons learned from the same honored teachers who taught their sisters, mothers and aunts. Two, Palmer Ware and Neillee Katona, saw these days from a special perspective, looking across two generations to memories of both mothers and grandmothers who preceded them on the graduation platform. Yes, we cherish these connections. We always will.
Now our graduates, alumnae and families have taken the legacy of their St. Margaret’s years and returned home. Soon, we will share our perfect place on the Rappahannock River with campers, writers, environmentalists, wedding parties and reuniting families, but for a moment it is all ours.
At the end of another steamy day, ours is almost the last boat on the river. To the right we can see my parents on their third-floor condominium balcony, to the left, faculty children splash in the pool. As my husband, David, turns off the motor we begin to drift. Like a twig dropped into the river by a nest-building osprey, we are carried along by the current.
Summer on the river–I can’t think of anywhere I’d rather be! Come back and join us soon.
Sincerely,
Margaret R. Broad,
Head of School
