A Monthly News Update From the St. Margaret's Campus

Vol. 8, No. 1 Tappahannock, Virginia, August 2005

CAPTAIN'S CORNER

Dear St. Margaret's friends and families,

Headmistress Margaret Broad Are we there yet? How many times have we said or heard these familiar words this summer? Each time they hold both anticipation and frustration, drawing our attention away from where we are to where we’re going. Whether that journey is around town or across the world, we know things will be different when we get there!

As we ready St. Margaret’s School to open her doors for her 85th year, those of us who have spent much of the summer here completing a journey of ideas, projects and plans, have frequently expressed both the joyous anticipation of welcoming this year’s students, families and faculty, and the frustration of how very much it takes to get everything ready. Some days we wish for just a few more weeks to be sure we have it all just right; more often we’d like to begin right now.

I can’t wait to show you all we’ve prepared for our school this year. It has been the work of many and has covered most dimensions of school life. No, we have not altered our core curriculum or our traditions or the values that guide our decisions, but we have revised the co-curricular and residential programs in response to parent and student feedback, completed the construction and renovation of three school buildings, and set up study rooms in each dormitory. We’ve also recruited new teachers and students who share the aspirations and sense of opportunity that first drew us all to join this school community, whether it was last year or half a lifetime ago. St. Margaret’s mission of educating young women for life has stood the test of time and proven its relevance in today’s world.

And yes, finally, we’re almost there! I look forward to sharing this year with you all, whether here on campus, in our publications, on our web site or in your community.

Sincerely,
Margaret R. Broad,
Head of School
