A Monthly News Update From the St. Margaret's Campus
Vol. 10, No. 1 Tappahannock, Virginia, August 2007
CAPTAIN'S CORNER
Dear St. Margaret's friends and families,
Welcome to the new school year! With summer on the river coming to an end, we are enjoying a few more twilight dinner cruises and river swims. Our newest teachers are all moved in with time now to explore the creeks by kayak. Our final summer camp (a boys’ football team!) is coming to a close. Although all of our visitors have been great, it is definitely time for girls! We’re ready!
As this year begins, we are all asking ourselves, “How did our small school get so big?” By September 1st, all of our students will have arrived, and we will have exceeded our enrollment goals. Don’t worry, we will still all fit in the chapel and dining room, and we will not have strayed from our enviable 6:1 student:faculty ratio! Our joy is that this slightly larger enrollment comes with firm adherence to the profile of students who are best suited to our program and remains within the diversity guidelines that have long made our student body an exciting reflection of the many cultures our graduates will experience in their colleges and careers. There is no better place for girls to learn about themselves and others than in this close community where the very structures of how we interact help us broaden our perspectives!
In addition to a few more students, we will have many more acres to enjoy together. I think we’ll be surprised at just how exciting it is to use the new athletic fields which are now turfed, irrigated, and awaiting fall teams. Although we have only completed the first phase of this project and still have a significant amount of fund raising to do to support it, we know our daily lives and school spirit will be positively impacted by this additional space. Plan now to join us on Sycamore Drive on Friday, October 12th at 3:30 pm when a short dedication ceremony will precede a field hockey match during Fall Family Weekend. You can also visit the Alumnae Association Craft Fair on campus that afternoon and consider walking or running in the River Run on Saturday morning.
We look forward to sharing this new school year with each of you. RiverViews will arrive monthly in the mail; Cross Currents will hit parent mailboxes by email at the end of each week; and our alumnae will receive their new monthly email communication beginning on Oct. 9th. And don’t forget, we keep our web site www.sms.org as current as possible. Let us know what you like and what you’d like to see!
Sincerely,
Margaret R. Broad,
Head of School
