A Monthly News Update From the St. Margaret's Campus

Vol. 10, No. 5 Tappahannock, Virginia,December 2007

CAPTAIN'S CORNER

Dear St. Margaret's friends and families,

This December, as our holidays propel us from giving thanks to giving gifts, I suspect we are all drawn backwards to reflect on cherished memories from other years. Now, as the days shorten and candles light our windows and tables, the traditions of our churches, schools and families focus our eyes and minds on the new light we welcome into our lives this month. In the Christian tradition, God gave us his Son. What were we given as children, and, for those of us with children of our own, what will our gifts be to them?

Childhood - those precious years between dependence and independence, when young minds open to new people, places, ideas, and dreams - which gifts translate our own dreams and love and which gifts will endure? After all these years here at St. Margaret's School, years spent teaching, listening, planning, traveling, watching, and worshiping, I know that the gift of a St. Margaret's School education is one of the most life-transforming gifts a young girl can receive.

For our former and present students who have received the gift of a St. Margaret's School education, I hope you will pause this month to remember the possibilities and ideas awakened in you within this community. For our parents who have chosen this education as a means of honoring their dreams for their daughters, I encourage you to remember the reasons for these choices and celebrate the opportunities you have made possible through your partnership with us. Yes, a St. Margaret's School education is a very expensive gift and one that is far less immediate than the package under the tree, but it is a gift for a lifetime, a gift whose dimensions will only be measured at the end of long, productive lives lived in the light we celebrate during this holiday season.

With this message, I send to each of you my thanks for your continuing care for St. Margaret’s School and all of us here who have given our lives to sustaining this light.

Sincerely,
Margaret R. Broad,
Head of School
