A Monthly News Update From the St. Margaret's Campus
Vol. 11, No. 1 Tappahannock, Virginia, August 2008
CAPTAIN'S CORNER
Dear St. Margaret's friends and families,
Is there anything more exciting than the beginning of a new school year? We love our summer months here on the river, painting, planning, pausing to enjoy long evenings with old friends and new books, but it is definitely time for our community to come together again. One of the special privileges of life lived at St. Margarets School is the opportunity to be part of the process of building a widely diverse group of individuals into a cohesive community where each of us has a part, from the newest eighth grader to the longest serving faculty member.
Creating a community takes both leadership and plans. I love the way writer and educator Parker Palmer encourages us to think about these:
Leadership is a concept we often resist. It seems immodest, even self-aggrandizing, to think of ourselves as leaders. But if it is true that we are made for community, then leadership is everyones vocation, and it can be an evasion to insist that it is not. When we live in the close-knit ecosystem called community, everyone follows and everyone leads.
From the very first day, everyone is known and everyone counts! Yes, some of the adults have the titles and some of the students have the tee-shirts that remind us that they are our selected leaders, but each of us has the responsibility to embrace the common mission that has brought us together and support each other in our pursuit of individual and community goals. These are the achievements we will celebrate in the pages of our publications, in the words spoken in private or in public, and in the lives of each member of this school community.
These are such important years in the lives of our students, years that will influence how they see themselves and how they understand the world. Our deliberate strategic decisions to bring together young women from across the country and around the world and to create programs that allow each one of them to build on individual strengths while gaining an appreciation for their differences give us a possibility-filled community.
Welcome to this new year! I look forward to sharing the stories of the fulfillment of these possibilities with you throughout the year. I also hope that you will share your perspectives with us.
Sincerely,
Margaret R. Broad,
Head of School
