A Monthly News Update From the St. Margaret's Campus

Vol. 11, No. 2 Tappahannock, Virginia, September 2008

CAPTAIN'S CORNER

Dear St. Margaret's friends and families,

Margaret Robinson Broad - Head of School Now, at the end of the second week of school, each of us has been challenged to make new connections, and each connection gives us an opportunity to see and know ourselves differently. Quickly, we find our places within this newly forming community, and often it is as easy as changing our shirts!

Consider Caroline, a senior boarding student beginning her fourth year at St. Margaret's. On opening day, she donned the 2008-2009 pale blue leaders' shirt and helped our newest students move into the dorms and get to know each other. That afternoon, she changed into the dressy school uniform, a crisp white shirt identifying her as a St. Margaret's girl, just like all the others lining up in front of St. Margaret's Hall to process behind the piper, cross and banner to our opening chapel service across the street at St. John's Church. Sunday found her decked in the full Grey Team Captain's garb, and by early afternoon, accompanied by cheers and face paint, every student had received her own blue or grey shirt, conveying an identity that will stay with her throughout her life.

On Tuesday, Caroline's cross-country uniform united her with another team. River Days brought more colorful shirts. This time the seniors wore thistle purple as they boarded the bus for Virginia Beach and the last of their stops on annual river explorations.

We know the girl. We see the shirts. We have articulated the responsibilities that go with each. And each girl, in each shirt, takes in its meaning and the connections it brings. From opening day until commencement, the connections deepen and the understanding grows, not just for Caroline, but for each of the young women who has begun this adventure we call an education for life.

Sincerely,
Margaret R. Broad,
Head of School
