Young SMS Alumnae Offer College Advice

They left the St. Margaret’s community to pursue their dreams, and on Jan. 7, young alumnae returned to share their advice, reconnect and reflect.

“St. Margaret’s offers you the world,” Susannah Orem ’05 said. “Wherever you want to go or whatever you want to do, this school will open up opportunities and show you how to take advantage of them.”

While most of these alumnae are still in college, some of their future plans include studying abroad, pursuing a master’s degree, becoming a nurse and working in the juvenile justice field. They credit the St. Margaret’s faculty for teaching them how to write well, manage time and be a leader.

“St. Margaret’s strengthened my will,” Palmer Ware ’05 said. “I know how to work hard. College wasn’t a shock to my system.”

As part of the co-curriculum program, a panel of alumnae met with juniors and seniors to talk about their college experience and answer student questions. The panel included Blair Passagaluppi ’08, a freshman at Sweet Briar College; Mary Beth DeLoache ’07, a sophomore at Parsons New School for Design; Michelle Burch ’07, a sophomore at the University of Virginia; and Mary Catherine Sargeant ’08, a freshman at the College of Charleston.

The panel stressed the importance of choosing the right college and how the college guidance office helped them through that process. Burch said that the time-management skills she learned here helped her balance a large college workload and use little blocks of time more efficiently. Boarders agreed that they had a smoother transition to college because they had already experienced community living. Throughout the day, alumnae mentioned the importance of the study skills class for developing consistent study habits.
