Coaching Duo Has High Expectations for 2000

First year St. Margaret’s School 1999-2000 varsity soccer coaches, Clarissa Roberts and Jennifer Gura, are eager to resume the season following Christmas vacation. Before the holidays, St. Margaret’s registered a 2 - 0 - 1 record. The Scotties tallied impressive early season wins over Steward (6-0) and Covenant (4-1) at home and a tie (1-1) with Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg. Junior Sara Shelton, of Virginia Beach, has been the team’s main offensive weapon in the early going, scoring several goals.

St. Margaret’s varsity soccer coaches, Clarissa Roberts (l.) and Jennifer Gura, have their 1999-2000 Scotties off to a strong start with a 2 - 0 - 2 overall record.

"We have had a long break and are well rested, hopefully injury-free", said Ms. Roberts and Ms. Gura. "But ‘well rested’ doesn’t always mean ‘well fit’ so we might do some extra sprints this week to double check that everyone stuck to their holiday workout plan."

Clarissa Roberts, a native of Cleveland, OH, is a 17-year veteran of the sport having played on local, traveling, high school and indoor teams. A four-year starter for Wooster College in Wooster, OH, Clarissa played sweeper for the Fighting Scots. During her four years (1990-94), the fighting Scots were nationally ranked and received an invitation to the NCAA soccer tournament in 1992. She also participated in indoor/outdoor track at the collegiate level.

After graduation, Ms. Roberts played one year of competitive soccer in California and 2 ½ years in Germany on a local women’s team. Ms. Roberts then coached for a year in California before accepting a position as assistant coach at the Würzburg American High School in Würzburg, Germany. She coached in Germany for 3 years before assuming her present position at St. Margaret’s School in Tappahannock.

"I am very excited to be working with this team and look forward to a good year," says Coach Roberts. "We are strong and deep up front and might surprise a lot of teams."

Assistant coach Jennifer Gura will help Coach Roberts with practice, drills and game strategies. Ms. Gura, a Spanish teacher at St. Margaret’s, coached junior varsity volleyball this fall; her team finished the season with 7 wins and 2 losses (one win shy of her best coaching mark, an 8-2 record, set in 1998). Ms. Gura, who is enthusiastic about coaching and working with girls, is a natural compliment to Coach Roberts on the sidelines.

St. Margaret’s played their first game since returning from break on Wednesday, January 5. Facing a scrappy Trinity team, the Scotties never got going offensively and tied, 1-1. The Scotties record stands at 2 - 0 -2; their next home game will be Friday (field adjacent to Essex Intermediate School).
