Carol Combs and Cameron Sgroi Named LIS All-Stars

Two St. Margaret's student-athletes have been selected as members of the League of Independent Schools All-Star teams for the winter sports season. Carol Combs and Cameron Sgroi received the honors in soccer and basketball, respectively. "It's quite an honor to be named to an all-star team that's chosen by the coaches of your school's opponents", said Sue Saunders, Athletic Director.

Hollis Duncan with Keith Oberg Cameron Sgroi (l.) and Carol Combs were named to the 1999-2000 LIS All-Star Teams in basketball and soccer, respectively. Cameron, a center, led the Scotties in scoring (7ppg) and rebounding (4.4 rpg); Carol, a versatile mid-fielder, was voted Most Valuable Player by her teammates.

LIS All-Stars are selected at the conclusion of the fall, winter and spring sports seasons. League coaches in each sport are given team rosters of all teams, from which they nominate players as all-star candidates. (The number of players nominated varies with the sport; for example each coach selects five players in basketball and eleven in soccer.) The names of the nominees are then forwarded to the athletic director of the school hosting the LIS tournament in that sport. The players receiving the most votes are the selectees. The most noteworthy part of the selection process is a restriction whereby coaches are not permitted to nominate their own players. In essence, an athlete's selection as an all-star is determined exclusively by the coaches of her school's opponents; making this a prestigious award that is highly regarded. Cameron Sgroi, a day student from Tappahannock, was the center on the 1999-2000 SMS varsity basketball team. She is the daughter of Joe and Cathy Sgroi. Her grandparents, Gene and Trink McCarthy, also reside in Tappahannock. Cameron led the Scotties in scoring average (7ppg) and rebounding (4.4 rpg). The highlight of the basketball season came at home in January when the Cameron-led Scotties, shocked favored archrival Christchurch with a 29-25 come-from-behind victory. Cameron was also a member of the varsity volleyball team this past fall. She will enter Virginia Polytechnic Institute as a freshman in the fall.

Varsity basketball head coach Sue Saunders, who has coached Cameron for a number of years said, "Cameron, or 'Roonie' as most of the team calls her, is a wonderful kid - she shows up everyday for practice, smiles, hustles, and also works to help other athletes achieve their best."

Carol Combs, a junior, played midfield for the Scotties this winter on the varsity soccer team. A native of Statesboro, Georgia, Combs also played field hockey during the fall season and is currently playing lacrosse this spring. Carol's league-best one-on-one dribbling skills and fierce ability to score were instrumental in elevating the play of the entire team. Although an unexpected 16 inches of snow forced the cancellation of many practices and several games, the Scotties nonetheless put together a successful soccer season. "Carol is a phenomenal athlete who is unstoppable when she's on...we look forward to her leadership as a senior next year," said varsity soccer coaches Clarissa Roberts and Jennifer Gura.

Ms. Saunders also pointed out that both Cameron and Carol were chosen as the Most Valuable Player by their teammates in their respective sports. "They represent the elite among student-athletes at St. Margaret's", she stated.
