St. Margaret's Students Compete in Math Contest at RCC
Fourteen St. Margaret's Algebra and Geometry students, grades 8-12, competed in mathematics competition at Rappahannock Community College (RCC) on Thursday, April 27 at the school's Warsaw campus. Students were invited to participate by St. Margaret's math instructors Keith Krusz (Calculus) and Susan Stephenson (Algebra). Mr. Krusz and Mrs. Stephenson, who sponsored the group, also selected the year 2000 team chosen by academic merit in the three subject areas - Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry.
Geometry teacher Shelley Hooker (r.) with Britton Faulkner (l.), Carter Holloway, and Margot Whisnant. Britt, Carter, and Margot are three of four St. Margaret's students who participated in Geometry competition at the RCC Math Contest April 29 in Warsaw.
"We try to generate as much enthusiasm as possible…we feel being selected to participate is quite an honor," Mr. Krusz said. In fact, each spring, the RCC math contest commands attention from advisors, teachers, activity sponsors, coaches and other supporters at the school who give encouragement while altering schedules and activities to accommodate the participants.
The RCC math competition features tests in designated subject areas. Students are allotted a designated amount of time to solve a series of problems; whoever answers the highest percentage correctly wins the competition. Since 1995, St. Margaret's boasts two overall contest winners in the Algebra I and Geometry competition. Jeong Min Kim of Seoul, South Korea, a senior, won a previous geometry contest. Jeong Min has been accepted to Johns Hopkins University and The University of Virginia; however, she is undecided where she will enter this fall.
"The grading committee only announces the winner in each category but, as sponsors, Susan [Stephenson] and I have helped grade in the past, and St. Margaret's usually has a good showing in each subject area," Mr. Krusz adds. "This year we didn't have any winners but we're very pleased with the opportunity to participate and to demonstrate our students' aptitude in mathematics."
2000 RCC Math Contest participants were: Algebra I - Sadaf Awan from Alexandria, Stacey Chong from Kwang Ju City, Korea, Alli Johnson from Aylett, Ashley Sanderson from Cartersville, and Allison Smith from Warsaw; Algebra II - Ariel Chen from Taipei, Taiwan, Caroline Chewning from Elizabeth City, NC, Heather Gilbert from Raphine, Hannah Lee from Seoul, Korea, and Ruth Redfearn from Kinsale; Geometry - Britton Faulkner from Irvington, Valerie Gale from Kingsport, TN, Carter Holloway from Culpeper, and Margot Whisnant from Hickory, NC.
