Runners Encouraged to Register Early for River Run
Tappahannock (September 5, 2000) - Area athletes are encouraged to register early for the second annual Rappahannock River Run, said race co-director Jenni Booker of Tappahannock.
While runners can register on race day (October 7) for the Rappahannock River Run, the entry fee will be higher than if they pre-register. For more information, contact St. Margaret's School, 445-3357, or visit the school web site at www.sms.org. Pre-registration ends September 22.
"Last year, we had a field of over 100 participants," she added, "and this year, we're promoting the race even more extensively."
The 5K (3.1 mile) run/walk will take place on Saturday, October 7 at 8:00 a.m. Runners who sign up by September 22 will enjoy an "early bird" rate of $12 and are guaranteed a race T-shirt. For advance registration information, contact SMS at (804) 443-3357 or visit the St. Margaret's School web site at www.sms.org and click on the River Run icon. Race-day registration costs $15 and will take place from 6:45 to 7:45 a.m. in front of St. Margaret's Hall on Water Lane.
The flat, fast course begins and ends at St. Margaret's School and takes participants through Tappahannock's historic district. Douglass Marshall of Mathews won the 1999 River Run with a time of 16:57.25, followed by Rudolph Pekarek of Kinsale in 16:59.38. Julia Smith of Tappahannock won the women's division and finished sixth overall in 19:19.29, with St. Margaret's School day student Britton Faulkner of White Stone placing second among women in 20:14.02. Patrick Brightwell was the first Essex County runner to finish, posting a time of 18:34 to claim first place in the men's 18-and-under division.
The 5K race will be followed by a "Water Lane Dash" for the younger set. All participants and spectators then are invited to stay for a crafts show and sale by selected regional artisans. The crafts show takes place from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in front of Brockenbrough House on the St. Margaret's School campus.
The Rappahannock River Run and Crafts Festival is a community outreach and fundraising project of the St. Margaret's School Alumnae Association.
