Eighteen Local Girls Attending St. Margaret's This Year

Tappahannock (September 14, 2000) - A total of 18 girls from the Tappahannock area began their studies at St. Margaret's School last week, joining a total of 41 day students from nine surrounding counties. According to an informal survey conducted by the SMS Office of Admission, the top three reasons that families chose St. Margaret's were its high-quality teaching, structured environment and individualized academic support.

"We help each student make the best of herself," said Director of Admission Kimberly McDowell, "so that she is ready not only for college, but also for the many opportunities she will have to make a difference in the world."

The group includes 15 returning students and three new enrollees. Attending for the first time are freshmen Sarah Copeland, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul W. Copeland of Tappahannock; Margaret Moncure, daughter of Ms. Mildred Moncure of Tappahannock and Mr. Richard Moncure of Colonial Beach; and Lindsay Swinson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe E. Swinson, Jr., of Tappahannock.

Now entering their senior year are Sarah Muller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John F. Muller of Tappahannock; Cathy Ryan, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. William G. Ryan of Tappahannock; and Claire Stephenson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas E. Stephenson of Tappahannock. Returning juniors include Shannon Davis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. Temple Davis of Tappahannock; Taylor Ellis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William F. Ellis of Dunnsville; Olivia Longest, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Longest, Jr., of Tappahannock; Rachelle Slotnick, daughter of Ms. Susan Latner of Tappahannock; Emily Stevens, daughter of Mr. William Stevens of Center Cross; Mary Burke Parker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Parker of Tappahannock; and Sarah Taliaferro, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bryan Taliaferro of Center Cross.

This year's sophomores are Lindsay Neist, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Terrance P. Neist of Howerton; Ann Kramer Osburn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert B. Osburn of Tappahannock; Jacky Sydnor, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James W. Sydnor of Tappahannock; Michelle Sylva, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Sylva of Tappahannock; and Paige Winebrenner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Winebrenner of Tappahannock.

St. Margaret's is a 150-student boarding/day school for girls in grades 8-12 that was founded in 1921 by the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia. Its mission, "Educating Young Women for Life," is reflected in a college preparatory curriculum and co-curricular activities that equip girls to face the technological, global, intellectual and societal challenges they will encounter in our rapidly changing world.
