Teacher Earns Computing Credential, Connects SMS to the World

(Tappahannock, September 20, 2000) - It may seem that teachers have the summer off. But during their warm-weather vacations, taking professional development courses is routine for St. Margaret's School faculty and staff.

Rick Kahler plays 12-string at leadership chapel 1999 St. Margaret's physics teacher and Network Administrator Rick Kahler, Ph.D., recently earned the Certified Novell Administrator credential. The Lancaster resident joins the ranks of computer professionals worldwide who possess vital expertise in the administration of Novell products.

Physics teacher and SMS Network Administrator Rick Kahler, Ph.D., is a good example of faculty members' commitment to lifelong learning. In July, he completed a Certified Novell Administrator (CNA) course at A-Plus Computer Education in Richmond and passed a national examination to earn the CNA credential.

"All of our students use the computer network to conduct research, write papers and communicate with each other and with faculty," said Headmistress Margaret R. Broad. "Rick's additional training will allow St. Margaret's to maintain its sharp technological edge."

Kahler's certification connotes a basic level of proficiency in the administration of Novell networks. In the complex world of computing, however, basic proficiency requires extensive knowledge and skills. To maintain the St. Margaret's 200-user, 75-workstation network, Kahler deals with a wide variety of hardware, including hubs, workstations, servers and Ethernet cables. He also helps users -- students, faculty and staff -- resolve their software problems.

"I keep e-mail and instant messenger up and working," Kahler said. "The students love that!"

The CNA credential is recognized worldwide as the standard of excellence for administering Novell products. From small businesses to corporate information services departments, progressive organizations employ CNAs to provide personalized, on-site administrative support for IntraNetWare and GroupWise users.
