Field Hockey Triumphs Over Northumberland, 6-0
Runners Beat Feet in Charlottesville Heat
Field Hockey: Britton Faulkner of Irvington made three assists and one goal and Sara Newman of White Stone added an assist and two goals as St. Margaret's (3-2-2 overall; 1-1 LIS) beat Northumberland High School 6-0. The game on September 29 was the first of two varsity field hockey matches between the schools this fall.
Claire Hopkins of Oak Grove is one of many young bright spots in the Scotties' future. She and many young teammates add to a stellar cast of seniors on this year's varsity team.
Midfielder Carol Combs and Newman were the lone scorers in the first half, which left SMS with a 2-0 edge. Forwards Sarah Weakley of Montross and Olivia Longest of Tappahannock scored the final two goals, giving Head Coach Kate Coghlan and Assistant Coach Whitfield Mastin reason to celebrate. The win was due in part to the team's "great chemistry," said the coaches. It was the Scotties' second shutout since opening the season with a 7-0 victory over Christchurch Episcopal School.
On October 3, with the Scotties playing at Trinity Episcopal in Richmond, Sara Newman and Carol Combs combined for St. Margaret's only goal against a deep Trinity team. Newman made a textbook corner pass to Combs in the middle, who scored to give SMS a 1-0 lead early in the game. All three Trinity goals were scored in the second half. The Scotties stayed close, but were unable to stop Trinity's offense, which rolled to a 3-1 victory.
St. Margaret's, cognizant that Trinity (9-3 overall) has played twice as many games in a more competitive league, knew it would take an A-game effort to keep close. While all of the Scotty seniors lived up to their billing, so did Trinity's most important players.
"This was, by far, our best game yet," Coghlan said, acknowledging a brilliant Trinity squad. "I am proud of the girls for their hard play. We never let up, and we played great hockey."
Cross Country: First-year cross country Coach David Cook takes the long view. His team, after competing in its third race, is beginning to find its racing form. The October 3 meet with The Covenant School of Charlottesville found SMS runners contending with sultry summer weather.
Despite the high temperatures, SMS junior Kelly Proctor of Urbanna took second overall, covering the 3.1-mile grass course in 25:40, less than a minute behind winner Katie Jensen (25:06) of Covenant. Alston Moore, fighting heat exhaustion, ran a strong race to place third overall in 26:46. Moore was followed by Ann Melchionna (30:39), who placed fifth overall. Robyn Ridderhoff (35:24) and Amy Dunsire (38:33) rounded out the SMS top five, placing eleventh and twelfth overall, respectively.
