Tappahannock, VA (October 24, 2000) - Britton Faulkner of Irvington, a fourth-year day student at St. Margaret's School, has been nominated for the seventh annual Wendy's High School Heisman Award. The national awards program, created by Wendy's, the National Association of Secondary School Principals and the Downtown Athletic Club of New York City, recognizes and honors high school seniors who demonstrate excellence in academics, community service and athletics.
"At St. Margaret's, we educate young women for life - academically, physically and personally," said Athletic Director Susie Ball Saunders. "Britt is an outstanding example of a student who has achieved this kind of balance and maturity."
Britt is the daughter of Norman and Michele Faulkner of Irvington. Mr. Faulkner is a vice president at Noblett Oil and Propane Company. Mrs. Faulkner, a member of the St. Margaret's School Board of Governors, is a stockbroker at First Union Securities in Kilmarnock. Britt also is the sister of brothers Ryan and Alec, and the granddaughter of Norman and Lois Faulkner of White Stone.
Britton passes the ball to a teammate on Thursday, October 19 versus Steward.
A four-year starting midfielder and two-time League of Independent Schools field hockey all-star, Britt is co-captain of this year's SMS varsity field hockey team. In addition, she has participated in varsity soccer for three years, softball for two years and crew for one year.
Her academic performance has been recognized by the National Honor Society, the Quill and Scroll journalism honor society and "Who's Who Among American High School Students." She currently holds a 4.0 cumulative grade point average, and is planning on applying to the University of Virginia, Wake Forest University, Davidson College and several other competitive institutions, with the goal of studying environmental science.
Outside the classroom, Britt is vice-president of the SMS student government. She also teaches Sunday school to preschoolers at St. Frances de Sales Catholic Church in Irvington, and has participated in a wide range of community service projects.
As a Wendy's Heisman nominee, Britt now is eligible for recognition as one of 1,020 state award finalists, 102 state award winners or 12 national finalists. One male and one female national finalist will be selected as the national winners during the Heisman Memorial Trophy weekend this coming December 7-10.
