Local Student-Athletes Earn SMS Sports Honors

Tappahannock, VA (November 27, 2000) - Six girls from the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula have earned recognition for their athletic accomplishments at St. Margaret's School. They were among 12 student-athletes who received awards at the recent SMS fall sports banquet.

"They, and their teammates, have learned more than how to put the ball in the goal or over the net," said Athletic Director Susie Ball Saunders. "They also have learned important lessons in teamwork, discipline and perseverance that will last beyond their sports careers."

Four student-athletes won spots on the League of Independent Schools all-star team for their respective sport. Junior Ruth Redfearn of Kinsale was named to the field hockey team, Senior Cathy Ryan of Tappahannock was named to the volleyball team for the second time, and Senior Britton Faulkner of White Stone was named to the field hockey team for the third time. Carol Combs, a senior boarder from Georgia, also was chosen as a field hockey all-star.

In addition, each of the SMS teams and coaches conferred awards. Junior Kelly Proctor of Urbanna was voted most valuable runner by her cross-country teammates. The varsity field hockey team chose Junior Taylor Ellis of Dunnsville as most improved player and Britton Faulkner as most valuable player. Sophomore Ann Kramer Osburn of Tappahannock was named most improved varsity volleyball player, and Cathy Ryan was named most valuable player.

Boarding students who earned sports recognition include Junior Anne Czechanski of Bowie, Md., coach's JV volleyball award; Junior Virginia King of Fredericksburg, coach's cross-country award; Freshman Robyn Ridderfhof of Fredericksburg, most improved runner; Freshman Jennifer Stuart of Stuart's Draft, most improved JV volleyball player; and Junior Maryama Tagoe of Alexandria, most valuable JV volleyball player.

St. Margaret's will field winter sports teams in basketball and soccer. The Scotty basketball squads, under the leadership of Head Coach Sue Saunders, Assistant Coach Whitfield Mastin and JV Coach Cupper Dickinson, begin play December 1 with the Christchurch Invitational Tournament. Soccer, coached by Essex resident Rodney Watkins, kicks off on December 5 with a match at the Steward School in Richmond. Both teams play their first home games on December 8, versus St. Anne's-Belfield and Virginia Episcopal, respectively.
