Six SMS Students Named to National Honor Society

Tappahannock, VA (December 1, 2000) - Six students at St. Margaret's School, four of them from the Middle Peninsula, have been inducted into the National Honor Society.

NHS inductees New members of the National Honor Society at St. Margaret's School include Bottom row, l. to r.: Olivia Longest of Tappahannock, Heather Porter of Walkerton, Hee-Ran Kim of Korea. Top row, l. to r.: Rachelle Slotnick of Tappahannock, Carter Holloway of Culpeper, Kelly Proctor of Urbanna.

"SMS provides opportunities for leadership, scholarship, character-building and service to all its students," explained Latin teacher and faculty sponsor Marshall Lloyd, "It's part of our mission of 'educating young women for life.' But NHS inductees have demonstrated a sustained, superior record in all four areas."

Academic standards for membership in St. Margaret's NHS chapter exceed the national organization's guidelines, Lloyd added. In order to be tapped, students must be juniors or seniors who have attended the school for at least two years, and over that period, have maintained an average of 90 or better. In addition, most NHS candidates have exceeded the school's community service requirement, and all of this year's inductees have either captained varsity teams, held student government posts or served as peer leaders.

Local students selected for NHS membership include juniors Olivia Longest, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Longest, Jr., of Tappahannock; Heather Porter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Porter of Walkerton; Rachelle Slotnick, daughter of Susan Latner of Tappahannock; and Kelly Proctor, daughter of Martha Heric of Urbanna and Daniel Proctor of Smithfield.

Boarding students named to membership include Junior Carter Holloway of Culpeper and Senior Hee-Ran Kim of Seoul, Korea.

The National Honor Society was established by the National Association of Secondary School Principals in 1921 - the same year that St. Margaret's School was established - to "create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership and to develop character" among high school students. Members are eligible to attend national conferences and regional leadership camps, and may qualify for one of 250 national NHS scholarships.
