Soccer Squad Outfoxes Foxcroft, 3-0
Neist and Ogundiran Lead SMS Hoopsters over St. Vincent's

Tappahannock, VA (February 5, 2001) - Head Soccer Coach Rodney Watkins sure wasn't kidding when he said that St. Margaret's would show no mercy in its head-to-head meeting with The Foxcroft School last week in Middleburg.

SMS varsity basketball St. Margaret's varsity basketball team beat Christchurch 50-28 at home on February 2. Junior boarder Carey Ballard (22) sank a free throw as teammates Sara Newman (4) of White Stone and Kristina Bethea (14) looked on.

In a game that appeared as effortless as a Sunday trot through horse country, the Scotties routed Foxcroft 3-0 on goals by Lancaster's Erin Kelley, senior Carol Combs and junior Tonia Arsala. The St. Margaret's coach promised his team would not back down, and it was relentless throughout the 60-minute contest, possessing the ball 90 percent of the time.

One of the younger, less-heralded Scotties was dominant early in the one-sided game. Freshman Kelley, substituting for a winded starter, scored her breakthrough goal to ignite the team. Dallas native Elizabeth LeBlanc, a standout senior goalie, made a brilliant penalty kick save that "maintained the momentum of the game," according to Assistant Coach Whitfield Mastin. The home team never had a chance. Were it not for some spectacular saves by Foxcroft's durable goalie, the Scotties might have reached double-digit goals.

Coach Watkins saw his team's sharp passing and overwhelming ball possession pay off with goals from veterans Combs and Arsala, and passes from developing stars like Sarah Weakley of Montross and Maggie Ransone of Kilmarnock, who were equally vital in their supporting roles.

Combs drilled home a short shot off a scramble in the second half. She could have easily added two or three more. Weakley then made a perfect feed to Arsala for a short tap-in as the game neared its final minutes. It was a smooth run for the St. Margaret's girls, who meet St. Anne's-Belfield at the Essex Intermediate School Field this Friday, February 9.

On Tuesday, January 30, St. Margaret's varsity basketball team bested its opponent with equal ease, defeating St. Vincent's 38-18. Sophomore Lindsay Neist of Tappahannock and freshman boarder Fola Ogundiran scored in the double-digits to secure the Scotty victory.
