Community Encouraged to Attend SMS Lecture Series
Tappahannock, VA (February 12, 2001) - Local residents are more than just welcome - they're encouraged to attend St. Margaret's evening lecture series February 27 through March 7.
Dr. Dan Roberts, host of the popular historical radio program, "A Moment in Time," is one of the speakers in this winter's evening lecture series at St. Margaret's School.
"We're excited about having such a wonderful group of programs to share with the community, " said coordinator Tobey Taliaferro. "Attendees will be able to take a trip around the world in a sailboat, travel back into the pages of history and relax to the harmonious sounds of an a cappella chorus - all without ever leaving Tappahannock."
There is no charge for attending the programs, each of which will last approximately an hour. The schedule includes:
The evening lecture series is part of St. Margaret's "Minimester," a two-week period that gives girls the opportunity to explore a wide variety of enrichment activities. This year's Minimester courses include children's literature, jewelry making, the American Broadway musical, darkroom photography and medical ethics.Tuesday, February 27, 6:30 p.m. - "Sailing the High Seas," with Hazel and David Laughton, Middlesex County residents who spent more than 20 years living on a sailboat and traveling the world. Reading Room, Viola H. Woolfolk Center.
Thursday, March 1, 6:30 p.m. - "A Moment in Time," with Dr. Dan Roberts, host of the popular historical radio program of the same name that is heard by more than two million listeners daily. Chapel, basement of St. Margaret's Hall.
Friday, March 2, 6:45 p.m. - "An a cappella Evening," with The Octâves, a student-led, male vocal ensemble from the University of Richmond that sings without accompaniment. Faculty/Student Center, lower level of Viola H. Woolfolk Center.
Monday, March 5, 6:30 p.m. - "Kayaking the Northern Neck," with Anna Campbell, organizer of the Northern Neck Paddlers Association. Ms. Campbell has explored nearly every inch of area waterways to research early steamboat landings. Reading Room, Viola H. Woolfolk Center.
Tuesday, March 6, 7:00 p.m. - "Poetic Autobiography," with Miller's Tavern resident, poet and storyteller Dorothy Alvis Holmes, winner of the Mid-Atlantic Poetry Award. Chapel, basement of St. Margaret's Hall.
Wednesday, March 7, 7:00 p.m. - Arts and Drama Night, featuring displays of picture frames, photographs, posters, silver jewelry and a quilt made by SMS students and teachers. Students will present the play This is a Test to conclude the evening. Community/Technology Center (art show), Ball Memorial Gymnasium (play).
