SMS Students Named to Leadership Positions
Tappahannock, VA (June 6, 2001) - Eight girls from the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula are among the St. Margaret's School students recently selected by their peers and faculty to lead the school in the 2001-2002 academic year. Single-sex schools like SMS offer girls many opportunities to develop their leadership skills, said Headmistress Margaret R. Broad.
The 2001-2002 student leaders at St. Margaret's School include: front row - Nicole Lane, Fola Ogundiran, Maggie Lu, Heather Porter of Walkerton, Maryama Tagoe, Anne Czechanski; second row - Brandy Benito, Shu Jin, Danielle Magid, Maggie Kite, Cassy Cormack, Jacky Sydnor of Tappahannock; third row - Hanna Lee, Yee Yan Lai, Kat Price, Evita Moody, Sarah Taliaferro of Tappahannock, Rachelle Slotnick of Tappahannock, Brittany Walker of Callao; top row - School President Kristina Bethea, Honor Council Head Carter Holloway. Not pictured: Emily Fisher of Lottsburg, Lindsay Neist of Tappahannock, Maggie Ransone of Kilmarnock.
"In the girls' school environment, students get to know themselves better," she said. "They can be who they are without the potential distraction or discouragement of boys. And, because all of the leadership positions are held by girls, there are more chances to serve."
The 2001-2002 SMS student leaders were recognized at a candlelight chapel service. Incoming student leaders from Tappahannock include Rachelle Slotnick and Sarah Taliaferro, both of whom will serve as peer leaders, Jacky Sydnor, who will serve on the Day Student Council, and Junior Class President Lindsay Neist.
Other local student leaders include Heather Porter of Walkerton, who will chair the Day Student Council and serve as head of Vestry; Emily Fisher of Lottsburg, who will serve as senior class president; Brittany Walker of Callao, who will serve on the Honor Council and as a peer leader; and Maggie Ransone of Kilmarnock, who will serve on the Day Student Council.
