Local Students Honored at SMS Awards Banquet
Tappahannock, VA (June 12, 2001) - St. Margaret's School students from the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula received a variety of awards at the school's recent academic banquet for their accomplishments during the 2000-2001 year. Among them were six rising seniors who won college prizes that make them eligible for special scholarship consideration if apply to and are accepted at the sponsoring institutions.
Jacky Sydnor of Tappahannock receives one of the several academic awards she earned at St. Margaret's School this year from Director of Studies ViAnn Farmer.
Kelly Proctor, daughter of Martha Heric of Urbanna, was nominated to the Wofford College Scholars Program and the Ohio Wesleyan University Honors Program. Wofford nominees must be in the top 10 percent of their class, have scored at least 1100 on the SAT, and possess commendable character, scholarship, leadership and service to others. Kelly also was inducted into the Quill and Scroll journalism honor society.
Olivia Longest, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Longest, Jr., of Tappahannock, was selected for the Converse and Wofford college programs. Converse College Junior Scholars must have a grade point average of at least 3.5 and SAT scores of at least 1100.
Lindsay Neist, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Terrance Neist of Howertons, won the Randolph-Macon Women's College Book Award. The Richmond chapter of the RMWC Alumnae Association presents this award to a student who possesses both leadership and academic potential.
Ruth Redfearn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rob Redfearn of Kinsale, received the Presbyterian College Junior Academic Award. Winners are chosen on the basis of academic achievement as evidenced by grades and SAT scores.
Emily Fisher, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Fisher of Lottsburg, and junior Brittany Walker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B.J. Walker of Callao, were presented the Converse College Leadership Award. As a result, the students are eligible to apply for participation in the college's leadership program next November. They were recognized because of their solid academic background and consistent commitment to activities and service.
Other winners of all-school awards include Britton Faulkner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Faulkner of White Stone. She won a Senior Speech Award for her presentation about the impact that an exchange trip to St. Margaret's School in New Zealand has had on her life.
Ten graduating seniors were recognized with gold or silver Presidential Educational Awards for high academic achievement. Gold seal winners achieve a grade point average of 90 or above and score at or above the 85th percentile on standardized academic tests. Claire Stephenson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ned Stephenson of Tappahannock, earned a gold seal award. Silver seal winners meet one of the two gold seal criteria. Local students earning silver seal awards include Britton Faulkner of White Stone; Sarah Muller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Muller of Tappahannock; and Cathy Ryan, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. William Ryan of Tappahannock.
In addition, each academic department presented awards for outstanding achievement or academic recognition to as many as two students in each of the more than 65 classes taught at SMS this year. Winners included: Dwann Cutler of West Point, academic recognition in U.S. History and in Health, and most outstanding in Vocal Ensemble; Taylor Ellis of Dunnsville, academic recognition in British Literature and most outstanding in Studio Art; Britton Faulkner of White Stone, academic recognition in Spanish IV/V and in Physics; Claire Hopkins of Oak Grove, academic recognition in Current Events; Alli Johnson of Aylett, academic recognition in World Literature and in French II; Olivia Longest of Tappahannock, academic recognition in Latin III; Lisa Magness of Urbanna, academic recognition in Chemistry and in Ecology; Margaret Moncure of Tappahannock, academic recognition in New Testament; and Sarah Muller of Tappahannock, most outstanding in Latin IV and academic recognition in Old Testament.
