Local Students Earn SMS Commencement Honors
Tappahannock, VA (June 13, 2001) - Graduation prizes at St. Margaret's School, including the school's top two awards, were presented to seven girls from the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula at commencement exercises in early June.
St. Margaret's School junior Emily Fisher of Lottsburg, shown here receiving the Viola H. Woolfolk Award from Headmistress Margaret R. Broad, was one of seven local students receiving awards at this year's commencement exercises.
Sara Newman, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Robert Newman of White Stone, won the School Prize. She was chosen by the SMS faculty and staff as the senior who has made the greatest contribution to the school through her dedication to high standards, trustworthiness and leadership, consistent with SMS's mission as a church school. Sara served as the school's president this year, and will attend James Madison University.
Dwann Cutler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Cutler of West Point, was recognized with the Spirit of St. Margaret's Award. She was selected from among the senior class as the student who best represents the school's spirit and has shown true appreciation for the way of life symbolized by the school. Dwann chaired the SMS Honor Council this year, and will attend Furman College.
Claire Stephenson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ned Stephenson of Tappahannock, won the Headmistress' Prize as the graduating senior with the highest cumulative grade point average over the last two years. Claire also received the D.A.R. Award for outstanding dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. She will attend the University of Virginia.
Britton Faulkner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Faulkner of White Stone, was presented the Aylett Prize for sportsmanship. A varsity athlete in field hockey, soccer and crew, she was St. Margaret's nominee for the Wendy's High School Heisman Award last fall. Britt plans to attend James Madison University.
SMS Board of Governors member L.H. Ginn III presented the Patron's Prizes for distinction in special phases of school life to two Tappahannock students. Sarah Muller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Muller, was recognized for her work as yearbook editor, and Cathy Ryan, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. William Ryan, was recognized for her leadership as senior class president. Sara will attend the University of Virginia, and Cathy will attend Virginia Tech. This year's prizes honored Ginn, a long-time friend and supporter of the school.
Junior Emily Fisher of Lottsburg, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Fisher, received the Viola H. Woolfolk Award. The prize was established by faculty and staff in memory of the late headmistress, and goes to the student who best exemplifies the compassion, understanding, selflessness, graciousness and poise for which Miss Woolfolk was known. Emily co-chaired the school's "Basic Needs" community service organization this year and will serve next year as senior class president.
