Local Enrollment Nears Record at SMS

Tappahannock (August 31, 2001) - St. Margaret's School opened Tuesday (September 4) with a full enrollment of 158; among the highest totals in the school's history. Contributing to the increase were 14 new day students from the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula. They joined 30 local residents who re-enrolled for a tally of 44 - one of the bigger day student populations at SMS in recent years.

"Our application rate keeps rising, as does the quality of prospective students," said Director of Admission Kimberly McDowell. "We've had to establish a waiting list for day families."

First-time local enrollees include a published poet, a blue ribbon equestrian, a middle school valedictorian, a middle school salutatorian and an aspiring novelist. Five come from families where a mother, grandmother, sister or cousin attended St. Margaret's, and three are from families who recently moved to the area.

St. Margaret's is a boarding/day school for girls in grades 8-12 that was founded in 1921 by the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia. Its mission, "Educating Young Women for Life," is reflected in a college preparatory curriculum and co-curricular activities that equip girls to face the technological, global, intellectual and societal challenges they will encounter in our rapidly changing world. Local families who want to learn more about attending St. Margaret's School in 2002-2003 are encouraged to call the Admission Office at 443-3357 and request an invitation to the next Day Student Visit Day, which will be held on October 26.
