Runners Encouraged to Register Now for River Run

Tappahannock (September 17, 2001) - Area athletes are encouraged to register now for the third annual Rappahannock River Run, said race director Dawn Crowther Biddlecomb of Kilmarnock.

"The race is growing in popularity every year," she said. "Whether you walk or run, it's fun for the whole family."

The 5K (3.1 mile) event will take place on Saturday, October 6 at 8:00 a.m. Participants whose registrations are postmarked by September 22 will enjoy an "early bird" rate of $12 and are guaranteed a race T-shirt. Registration forms are available by calling Liz Musselman at (804) 443-3357. Race-day registration costs $15 and will take place from 6:45 to 7:45 a.m. in front of St. Margaret's Hall on Water Lane.

The flat, fast course begins and ends at St. Margaret's School and takes participants through Tappahannock's historic district. Douglass Marshall of Mathews won the 2000 River Run with a time of 15:49. Julia Smith of Tappahannock won the women's division in 18:37.

The 5K race will be followed by a "Water Lane Dash" for the younger set. All participants and spectators then are invited to stay for a crafts festival featuring unique gifts, clothing and home décor. The crafts festival takes place from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in front of Brockenbrough House on the St. Margaret's School campus.

The Rappahannock River Run and Crafts Festival is a community outreach and fundraising project of the St. Margaret's School Alumnae Association.
