Three Students Named to National Honor Society

Tappahannock (October 22, 2001) - A Middle Peninsula girl and two other students at St. Margaret's School have been inducted into the National Honor Society. Juniors Lindsay Neist, daughter of Terry and Carol Ann Neist of Howertons; Evita Moody of Washington, DC; and Hanna Lee of Seoul, Korea, recently were tapped for membership at a special chapel service.

"These young women exemplify St. Margaret's mission of 'educating young women for life,'" said Latin teacher and faculty sponsor Marshall Lloyd. "They are more than outstanding scholars; they already have exhibited exemplary leadership, character and service - the skills they will need to be tomorrow's community leaders."

Neist is junior class president and plays on the varsity volleyball, basketball and lacrosse teams. She was one of two students chosen to represent SMS this summer in an exchange with St. Margaret's School in Berwick, Australia. Neist, Lee and Moody join four local seniors who were selected last year: Olivia Longest and Rachelle Slotnick of Tappahannock, Heather Porter of Walkerton and Kelly Proctor of Urbanna.

Academic standards for membership in St. Margaret's NHS chapter exceed the national organization's guidelines, Lloyd said. In order to be tapped, students must be juniors or seniors who have attended the school for at least two years and maintained an average of 90 or better over that period. In addition, most St. Margaret's NHS candidates have exceeded the school's community service requirement.

The National Honor Society was established by the National Association of Secondary School Principals in 1921 - the same year that St. Margaret's School was established - to "create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership and to develop character" among high school students. Members are eligible to attend national conferences and regional leadership camps, and may qualify for one of 250 national NHS scholarships.
