St. Margaret's School Announces Promotions
Tappahannock (February 4, 2002) - Much of the current strength and stability of St. Margaret's School comes from experienced teachers and administrators. The school's top leaders, for example, have given more than 50 combined years of service to SMS.
"Young people and institutions need many of the same things to stay strong and healthy," said Head of School Margaret R. Broad. "Consistent leadership tops the list, whether from parents, in the case of teenagers, or from administrators, in the case of schools."
Broad recently recognized SMS Chaplain Ann Reeder Riggs for 10 years of service, one of the longest chaplaincies at a Virginia independent school. She also announced three changes to her cabinet, which recognize similar dedication.
Tappahannock resident Kimberly McDowell has been promoted to Assistant Head for External Affairs with overall responsibility for the school's admission, development and marketing programs. McDowell joined the SMS faculty in 1991 as a Spanish/ English as a Second Language teacher. She has worked in admissions for nine years, leading the Admission Office for the last four. In her new position, McDowell will continue to direct St. Margaret's Admission Office.
Cathy Sgroi, formerly Dean of Faculty and Student Life, has been promoted to Assistant Head for School Life. The new position recognizes her leadership of academic and residential programs over the last year. Sgroi joined the SMS faculty in 1976 as a math teacher and served as Math Department chair before becoming Dean of Faculty in 1996. She and her family live in Tappahannock.
Warsaw resident Nancy Smith, formerly Business Manager, now is Chief Financial Officer. The new title is an acknowledgement of Smith's expert management of St. Margaret's financial operations and ancillary services. Smith joined the SMS staff in 1990.
