Give the Gift of Life at SMS Blood Drive
Tappahannock (April 1, 2002) - Local residents have an especially convenient opportunity to donate blood, thanks to St. Margaret's School. The student community service organization, Basic Needs, is holding a blood drive on Saturday, April 6 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the SMS gymnasium on Water Lane.

"We have classes all day during the week, and we know that many adults have to commute to work, or can't leave their job to make a donation," said Basic Needs Co-Chair Emily Fisher of Lottsburg. "We're thinking that a weekend blood drive will make it easier for people to give the gift of life."
This marks the third year that St. Margaret's has worked with the American Red Cross to sponsor a blood drive. The goal is 30 pints, but Fisher is hopeful that together, members of the school and community can exceed it.
According to the Red Cross, most people aged 17 and over qualify to give blood if they weigh at least 110 pounds and have not donated within the last 56 days. Donations are collected by health care professionals, using sterile supplies, to ensure the safety of both the donor and the blood supply.
