Local Student-Athletes Earn SMS Sports Honors
Tappahannock (April 1, 2002) - - Four girls from the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula have earned recognition for their athletic accomplishments at St. Margaret's School. They were among the winter season student-athletes who received awards at a late March sports banquet.

"All of our student-athletes are winners," said Athletic Director Sue Saunders. "Through the discipline of playing sports, they are developing the self-confidence and teamwork skills that will help them succeed in life."
Three student-athletes won spots on the League of Independent Schools all-league team for their respective sport. Seniors Sarah Taliaferro of Center Cross and Kelly Proctor of Urbanna were named to the soccer team. In addition, senior boarder Kristina Bethea earned All-LIS honors in basketball.
Each of the SMS teams and coaches also conferred awards. Taliaferro was voted most valuable player by her varsity soccer teammates. Both she and Proctor received senior awards for three and four years of varsity play, respectively. Her varsity basketball teammates selected freshman Becky Clark of Lively as most improved player. Freshman Palmer Ware of Dunnsville was chosen by members of the junior varsity soccer team as most valuable player.
Boarding students who earned sports recognition include Bethea, of Rantoul, IL, most valuable varsity basketball player and senior award for three years of varsity play; junior Fola Ogundiran of Bowie, MD, varsity basketball coach's award; sophomore Shahar McSalters of Upper Marlboro, MD, most improved JV basketball player; sophomore Yoo Ri Jung of Seoul, Korea, most valuable JV basketball player; and sophomore Veazey Bobo of Lookout Mountain, TN, JV basketball coach's award.
Also, junior Jessie Malm of Alexandria, most improved varsity soccer player; senior Danielle Magid of Washington, DC, senior award for three years of varsity play; eighth-grader Jennie Lynne Leonard of Richmond, most improved JV soccer player; junior Marin Brown of Charlottesville, JV soccer coach's award; junior Mary Andrews of Alexandria, most valuable swimmer; freshman Rachel Chang of Seoul, Korea, and eighth-grader Sojin Lee of Seoul, Korea, most improved swimmers.
St. Margaret's is fielding spring sports teams in crew, lacrosse, softball and tennis - and all four look to be contenders. The crew team, coached by Skye Elliott, Kary Fronk and Andrea Robinson, launched a promising season with wins in two of its three races at the Crawford Bay Classic in Portsmouth on March 23. Coach Cupper Dickinson and the varsity lacrosse squad triumphed 6-1 over St. Gertrude's in their first outing, a home game on March 21. The softball Scotties, coached by Sue Saunders and Temple Davis, swung into action against St. Catherine's on March 26 with a five-inning, 15-3 win. Tennis, coached by Tappahannock resident Katie Spiegler, also began its season on a high note, serving up a 5-4 victory over Christchurch on March 22.
