Tappahannock (April 15, 2002)- St. Margaret's School teams are following strong starts with continued winning performances as the spring sports season continues.

Program Softball: St. Margaret's varsity softball team met the always competitive St. Gertrude's School on home turf April 9 and wasted no time in sending them back to Richmond defeated. Powered by the steady pitching of freshman Becky Clark of Lively and backed by catcher Catherine Chilton of Lancaster, the Scotties dispatched the Gators in five innings, 13-3. Senior Mary Burke Parker of Tappahannock hit 4 for 4 and Chilton was 3 for 4 with one triple.

"Thus far, we've proven ourselves as one of the teams to beat," said Head Coach Sue Saunders. "It will probably be us, Blessed-Sacrament Huguenot and Collegiate as the top three contenders. We're a good, strong team and everybody's on."

St. Margaret's lost to one of those league leaders, Collegiate, on April 5 at home. The pitching of junior Julie Srebro provided a bright spot. The first-time pitcher turned in a strong performance not fully reflected in the final 2-4 score, Saunders said.

The story was different on April 3, when the Scotties battled St. Anne's-Belfield in Charlottesville to a 6-4 victory. Senior pitcher Shannon Davis of Tappahannock fired ball after sizzling ball at STAB batters for seven full innings. Senior Olivia Longest of Tappahannock hit 2 for 3, while both Parker and sophomore Marin Brown were 2 for 4.

Program Crew: St. Margaret's varsity crew team swept all five of its races on April 6 in Norfolk, confirming that the Scotties are indeed a force to be reckoned with in this year's Southeast Virginia Rowing Association.

"One of my goals for this year was to have the team perform competitively," said Coach Skye Elliott. "I think it is evident in the last two regattas that St. Margaret's has made its mark as a competitive team."

In the winning SMS varsity boat were coxswain Anne Czechanski, senior Sarah Taliaferro of Center Cross, Cariad Shepherd, freshman Annie Arnest of Kinsale and senior Kelly Proctor of Urbanna. The first-place JV "A" boat consisted of coxswain Patti Webb, Beth Brinkley, Catherine Farland, Neillee Katona of Dunnsville and Palmer Ware of Dunnsville.

Rowing for the victorious JV "B" were coxswain Emily Hodkins, Laura Caton, Jessica White, Jessie Malm and Rae McCrae. The Novice "A" winners were Arnest, Farland, Katona and Ware. The winning St. Margaret's Novice "B," which had never competed in a race before, included coxswain Cecilia Farfan, Jennie Lynn Leonard, Juliane Kelly, Malm and Brooke Shafer.
