Local Student-Athletes Earn SMS Spring Sports Honors

Tappahannock (June 10, 2002)- Seven girls from the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula have earned recognition for their athletic accomplishments at St. Margaret's School. They were among the spring season student-athletes who received awards at a year-end sports banquet.

Three student-athletes won spots on the League of Independent Schools all-league team for their respective sport. Seniors Mary Burke Parker and Shannon Davis, both of Tappahannock, were named to the all-league softball team. It marked the third year that Davis was tapped for the honor and the second for Parker. In addition, junior boarder Cassy Cormack earned All-LIS honors in lacrosse for the second year.

Each of the SMS teams and coaches also conferred awards. The three crew coaches chose senior Sarah Taliaferro of Center Cross for the coaches' award. Her teammates voted freshman Palmer Ware of Dunnsville the most valuable novice rower. Special recognition in the form of a "Moment of Excellence" Award was given to senior Kelly Proctor of Urbanna for her contributions to starting the crew program. In addition, Taliaferro and Proctor were presented with senior awards for four years of varsity crew.

The SMS softball team chose senior Mary Burke Parker of Tappahannock for the most valuable player award. Parker also won the prize for highest batting average. Coach Sue Saunders presented a senior award for five years of varsity play to Davis, and awards for three years to Nikki Clark of Kinsale and Tappahannock's Parker and Olivia Longest.

Boarding students who earned sports recognition include Susie Aguirre of Potomac, MD, senior award in lacrosse; Kristina Bethea of Rantoul, IL, senior award in tennis; Emily Chang of Seoul, Korea, lacrosse coach's award; Cormack of Ashburn, VA, most valuable lacrosse player; Anne Czechanski of Bowie, MD, senior award in crew; Cecilia Farfan of Mexico City, Mexico, most improved novice rower; Catherine Johnston of Houston, TX, most improved lacrosse player; Maggie Kite of Oklahoma City, OK, most valuable tennis player; Kate Lowe of Darnestown, MD, coaches' award in novice crew; Danielle Magid of Washington, DC, coach's and senior awards in tennis; Cariad Shepherd of St. Thomas, USVI, most valuable varsity rower; and Jennifer Stuart of Stuart's Draft, VA, most improved tennis player.

St. Margaret's offers 13 teams in 10 different sports. It is fielding fall teams in cross-county, field hockey and volleyball, and has expanded the crew conditioning program to include both the fall and winter sports seasons.
