"We are thrilled to have artists and educators of their caliber at St. Margaret's," said Fine Arts Department Chair Catherine Neuhardt-Minor. "Our students will benefit, and so will the community."
This fall, the Konstantinovs are teaching adult drawing and painting classes two evenings a week, instructing students, and leading the after-school art activity. They also will be mounting a group exhibit with Neuhardt-Minor in early October.
The former Lancaster residents made a name for themselves locally over the last year with unique paintings on boat sails, commissioned portraits, and a spring show at Westminster-Canterbury. Their reputation, however, extends far beyond Virginia. Konst's murals in the papal legate's Maltese chapel won the Vatican's silver medal for Christian art in 1999, and Konstantina's postage stamp designs earned the European Philatelic Exhibition's grand prize in 2000.
Both Konstantinovs hold master of fine arts degrees from the Sofia Academy of Fine Arts in their native Bulgaria. He works in oils and mixed media in the abstract expressionist style, while she is an accomplished miniaturist, watercolorist and realist. The two often collaborate on a single piece, such as the Stations of the Cross series they will exhibit at St. Margaret's. They also plan to create one or more works of art for the school in concert with their SMS students.
