"Our families tell us they benefit as much as the students they host," said Leslie Bohon, director of the SMS international program. "It's fun, educational and enriching."
This year, 10 families have opened their hearts and homes to St. Margaret's international students. They include the students in their usual activities, which range from taking girls to a football game or inviting them for Thanksgiving dinner to offering a pleasant place for them to spend an occasional weekend away from campus. Friendship Families and their students include: Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Arnold of Fredericksburg, Kaoru Higaki ; Michael Burch and Dr. Sheri Hummel of Burgess, Ja Young Kwon; Dr. and Mrs. Richard Carpenter of Irvington, Jee Sun Lee; Mr. and Mrs. David Chiles of Reedville, Regina Saravia; Mr. and Mrs. William E. Grant, Jr., of Montross, Rita Huang; Mr. and Mrs. David Laughton of Urbanna, Cariad Shepherd; Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Peeler of Glen Allen, Yuki Masada; The Rev. and Mrs. James G. Reed of Fredericksburg, Melissa Farara; Alan Sader and Ann Chenoweth of St. Stephen's Church, Eileen Tsai; and Mr. and Mrs. George A. Taylor of Fredericksburg, Hanna Lee. The 20 international students at SMS this year represent seven countries: British Virgin Islands, French West Indies, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Mexico, and Taiwan. Their families chose St. Margaret's because of its safe, rural location, small class size and well-established English as a Second Language curriculum. |
